Harper (formerly HarperDB) is an American technology company that develops a composable application platform designed to accelerate web performance for data-intensive applications.[1] The company, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Denver, Colorado, specializes in edge computing and distributed systems technology.[2]

History

[edit]

Harper was launched in 2017 as HarperDB by Stephen Goldberg, Kyle Bernhardy, and Fred Yoon, initially positioned as a distributed systems platform focused on database performance.[3] The company was founded with the vision of delivering incredible performance for web-based applications, starting with a database foundation.[4]

In March 2025, the company announced its rebranding from HarperDB to Harper, removing the database notation to reflect its evolution from a database vendor to a full-stack application delivery platform.[5] CEO and co-founder Stephen Goldberg explained that the rebrand reflects the company's long-term vision of delivering the most performant, future-forward application platform in the world.[6][7]

Technology and product

[edit]

Harper's core innovation lies in its unified architecture that combines data, application, cache, and messaging functions into a single process, on a single server.[8] This approach eliminates traditional barriers that typically exist between different layers of the software stack.[9][10]

Open source community

[edit]

Harper joined the OpenJS Foundation as a Silver member, marking a commitment to the JavaScript community.[11] The company is uniquely built entirely in Node.js, making it the only database of its kind with this architecture.[12] According to Ethan Arrowood, Senior Software Engineer at Harper, "Joining the OpenJS Foundation marks a natural step in Harper's commitment to the JavaScript community".[13]
