The Gifford Fire is a large wildfire that is burning in San Luis Obispo County, California, and Santa Barbara County, California. The fire has burned 83,933 acres (33,966 ha) and is 7% contained, as of August 5.

Progression

The fire began at 3:44 p.m. on August 1. The cause is currently under investigation. [1] The fire was followed around a week after the Madre Fire was contained in the same area.[2] The wildfire grew in size to 5,000 acres (2,000 ha) within the first few hours. Two days later, the fire grew to 49,761 acres (20,138 ha). By August 5, the fire had grown to 82,567 acres (33,414 ha).[3] Currently, the fire is only 13 miles (21 km) Northeast from the populated Santa Maria, California.[1]

Effects

The fire prompted the closures of California State Route 166, west of Cuyama along with Los Padres National Forest.[4] Evacuation orders were issued by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection on August 2 in San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County for zones LPF-014, LPF-015, LPF-016, LPF-017, LPF-018, LPF-019, SLC-335, SLC-336, SLC-337, LPF-165, SBC-159-A, SBC-161-A, SBC-163, SBC-167, SBC-169-A, and SBC-169-B. and evacuation warnings for zones SLC-225, SLC-239, SLC-240, SLC-262, SLC-264, SLC-297, SLC-298, SLC-311, SLC-312, SLC-334, LPF-011, LPF-013, SBC-159-B, SBC-161-B, and SBC-172.[1] 460 structures are threatened by the wildfire.[2]

On August 5, the fire passed the Madre Fire, to became the largest of the 2025 California wildfire season.[5]
