Life and career

[edit]

Willis studied arts and economics at the University of Sydney and completed a Master of Economics. She developed an interest in photography through the university's Architecture Department and later transitioned into filmmaking.[3]

In 1995, she co-founded the production company Potoroo Films with producer Kerry Rock.[4][5] Her early films include Trees at the Crossing (1995), A Small Boat on an Ocean of Promises (1996), and Edge of Town (1999). She directed the feature film Watermark in 2003, which was screened at the Directors' Fortnight at Cannes Film Festival.[6][7][8][9][10] Willis' short films have been screened at over seventy international festivals.

In 2005, Willis moved to London, where she continued working in both film and photography.[11] She directed Insect O Cide, a documentary written and narrated by biologist Dave Goulson, which explores the decline of global insect populations.[12] Filming of the documentary was done over a period of few years and was completed in 2024.[13]
