The Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIP) is an act of the Saskatchewan Legislature in the Canadian province of Manitoba that is both an access-to-information statute and an information-privacy statute.
Provisions
[edit]Local authorities, including municipal governments, universities, and school boards, are not included under the legislation, but are covered by the Local Authority Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.[1][2] Health bodies fall under the Health Information Privacy Act.[2]
The legislation covers activity relating to trade missions overseas.[3]
Statistics relating to letters from members of the public are included in the legislation.[4]
Implementation
[edit]At least one US resident has been able to make a successful request under the legislation.[5] There has been at least one occasion where the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly has filed a request and the deadline for the government providing a response has lapsed.[6]
Criticism
[edit]The fact that that responses may cost money has been criticised by the Information and Privacy Commissioner.[2]
