Ekaterina Verbina (Russian: Екатерина Андреевна Вербина; born 15 August 1998) is a Russian freestyle wrestler competing under neutral status. She won the gold in the 55 kg category at the 2025 European Wrestling Championships and has earned medals at both junior and senior levels.[1]
Career
[edit]Born in Krasnoyarsk and later training in Makhachkala at RK Krasnoyarsk under coach Svetlana Gracheva, Verbina began her athletic journey transitioning from folk dancing to wrestling.[2] She was part of Dagestan's dominant women's freestyle team at the 2025 Russian Championships in Moscow, where she won the 50 kg national title with an 18–9 victory over Alexandra Skirenko.[3]
In April 2025 at the European Championships in Bratislava, she reached the final of the 55 kg freestyle event, defeating Tuba Demir of Turkey 13–6 and Oleksandra Khomenets of Ukraine 9–3 before narrowly losing 6–5 to France’s Tatiana Debien to claim silver.[1][4][5]
Earlier in 2025, Verbina placed fifth at the Zagreb Open Ranking Series in Croatia, securing a technical win (10–2) over Mariana Dragutan of Moldova before losing to Debien in the semifinals. She also finished fifth at the Tirana Ranking Series II, winning one repechage bout.[1]
At junior levels, she claimed silver in the 55 kg category at the 2019 European Junior Championships and bronze at the 2021 U23 World Championships in Serbia.[1]
Her progression began early—she won gold at the 2022 Cadet European Championships and was a victor at junior European competitions.[6][7]
