From 2021 to 2023 she wrote a monthly philanthropy column for the Ottawa Business Journal. uses the source https://obj.ca/people/sam-laprade/ but if I click it I see 403 Forbidden. If I throw that URL in archive.org I can't find evidence for the claim in the article. Polygnotus (talk) 16:34, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I don't get a 403 error. It shows 2 pages of articles. EricYesYes (talk) 16:47, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Possibly because I am in Europe, some websites prefer serving 403 errors over complying with GDPR.
Yeah, that is what I see on archive.org. But which of those support the claim that From 2021 to 2023 she wrote a monthly philanthropy column for the Ottawa Business Journal? Some of the articles are by different people (not Sam Laprade).
Also note you can't upload screenshots of images you don't own on MediaWiki Commons, they are pretty strict with copyright stuff. Polygnotus (talk) 16:51, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Right. I understand. I originally got that info from here. But that is a more of a self published site and thought that OBJ.ca link showed her articles. She has some written columns with OBJ in that OBJ link, but we don't have a reliable source that says she has a monthly column. I agree, we should remove this line. The article says Since 2009, she has served as director of Gryphon Fundraising, providing donor analytics to nonprofit clients. but the source used does not support that claim. It does say that she is a director, but not that she has been a director from 2009 till now. Polygnotus (talk) 17:50, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. You're right. It does say "Since 2009, Sam has helped hundreds of charities and non-profits with their donor analytical needs. Over this time, she has seen firsthand the positive results from the Gryphon Report.", but it doesn't say she was a director the whole time. I found 2 other links that say she started as Director with Gryphon (Link) and Link.(But again, both of these could be considered Primary.
Maybe we reword to :"Laprade has served as Director of Gryphon Fundraising, providing donor analytics to nonprofit clients since 2009." What do you think? EricYesYes (talk) 00:48, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@EricYesYes: Yeah, rewording it to a claim that is supported by a reliable source is usually the best option. Polygnotus (talk) 01:31, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

More

[edit]

She holds a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential. Yeah that takes 40-80 hours of study, is that worth mentioning?[1] My golf license was harder to get. Polygnotus (talk) 01:55, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Asking me to review is always dangerous, because I am infamous for nitpicking and allergic to CV padding methods. Like mentioning a non-notable award (Creative Arts & Design Award, Algonquin College Alumni of Distinction Awards (2022).) given by a school they donated money to. As part of her effort to give back to the College, Laprade has decided to leave a legacy gift, which will help future students attain the education they need to start their careers.[2] If I donate to some schools they'll probably give me nice awards too. I would not at all be surprised if she isn't considered WP:NOTABLE. Polygnotus (talk) 01:38, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Unsurprisingly, the other awards are also nonsense. She got 2 RTDNA awards while working at CityNews 101.1. She hosted The Sam Laprade Show on CityNews 101.1 from 2021 to 2023. CityNews Toronto is a so-called Gold Sponsor of RTDNA which is where she got the awards.[3][4]

CityNews is owned by Rogers Communications who together with Bell Canada have a duopoly. Both companies, and their various brands, are among the largest members and sponsors of RTDNA and consistently win awards (Bell got 49 in 2020 and 41 in 2023). A bunch of RTDNA board members are current or former employees of Bell and Rogers properties.[5]

In summary, this is not an independent party giving an award based on merit, but a quid pro quo deal.

Conflict of interest disclosure

[edit]

I appeared as a guest on Sam Laprade’s television and radio program in 2024. No payment or other compensation was exchanged, and I am not editing on her behalf or at her request.
