Zubair ul Islam Bhat is an Indian student from Kupwara district in Jammu and Kashmir who gained attention after qualifying the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) in 2025. He had earlier been detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) but was later released and resumed his academic journey. His case drew media interest as an example of a student overcoming challenges to pursue higher education in medicine.
Early life and education
[edit]Bhat is a resident of Khumriyal village in the Lolab valley of North Kashmir’s Kupwara district. He completed his schooling at Army Goodwill School, Chandigam, which is located in a remote area of the region.[1]
In 2023, he appeared for the NEET examination and secured a seat in the Bachelor of Unani Medicine and Surgery (BUMS) program. Unsatisfied with his result, he continued to prepare for NEET and appeared again in 2025, securing 535 marks out of 720.[2]
Detention and release
[edit]In late 2024, Bhat was detained under the Public Safety Act (PSA) by local authorities who alleged suspicious internet activity, including use of a virtual private network (VPN). His phone was examined, and no incriminating evidence was reportedly found. His detention attracted attention from local political leaders, including Sajad Lone of the Jammu and Kashmir People’s Conference, who intervened in the case.
