Zayre Ferrer is an Afro-Panamanian writer and producer.[1]

Early Life

Ferrer was born in Panama City, Panama to mother Nitza Ferrer and Salsa singer Carlos "El Grande" Ferrer. They were brought up in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Education

Ferrer graduated from Florida International University. They completed an MFA in Dramatic Writing at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts and later returned to complete an MFA in Musical Theater Writing where they were awarded the Elphaba Thropp Fellowship under the mentorship of Winnie Holzman.[2][3]

They are currently a Creative Writing MFA mentor at the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA).[4]

Career

Ferrer worked as Creative Director at Story House Productions were they consulted on the Netflix Original Series El Chapo[5].They went on to co-create the Netflix Original Series Tijuana (2019).[6][7] Ferrer wrote on HBO Max's pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death (2022).[8]

Honors and awards

In 2022, the writers and cast of Our Flag Means Death Season 1 were nominated for a Peabody Award.[9]

In 2023, the writers of Our Flag Means Death Season 2 were nominated for a Ray Bradbury Award in the category of Outstanding Dramatic Presentation

In November 2024, Ferrer was awarded a Visionary Fellowship from The Inevitable Foundation[10], which supports disabled filmmakers.
