Wooshin Pigment Co., Ltd. (Korean: ㈜우신피그먼트) is a South Korean pigment manufacturer headquartered in]. Founded in 1977 by Chang Sung-sook,[1][2] the company produces a wide range of organic and inorganic pigments, liquid colorants, and specialty pigments for various industries, including paints, coatings, plastics, cosmetics, and construction materials.[4][5] Wooshin Pigment is recognized as a leading company in the South Korean pigment market, often cited for its significant market share (historically reported at 40-50%[2]) and its pioneering role in developing eco-friendly pigments, where it has been described as holding a top position in domestic production.[2][6] The company also serves as the Korean partner for Lanxess, distributing their Bayferrox® iron oxide pigments.[7][8]

History

Wooshin Pigment was established in 1977 by Chang Sung-sook, who took over a struggling pigment company at the age of 22 with an initial capital of KRW 6 million.[2] The company was incorporated as Wooshin Pigment Co., Ltd. in June 1989.[1] In its early years, the company focused on competing with more expensive imported pigments, primarily from Japan, by developing its own technology and securing business with large Korean corporations.[2]

A significant development was the partnership with the German chemical company Lanxess (formerly part of Bayer AG). Wooshin Pigment began importing semi-finished products from Lanxess and utilized its own technology to manufacture over 200 varieties of finished pigment products under its GEOLOR® brand. This strategy contributed to import substitution and price competitiveness in the Korean market.[2][6]

In 2008, Wooshin Pigment developed South Korea's first liquid pigment compatible with both water-based and oil-based applications.[2][6] The company expanded its production capabilities by establishing a second factory in Iksan, Jeollabuk-do, in late 2013, described as having the largest domestic scale for pigment production at the time.[2][6] By the mid-2010s, Wooshin Pigment reported a domestic market share of 40-50%.[2]

  • AQUALOR®: Eco-friendly water-based liquid colorants for paints, coatings (paper, toy, seed, leather), and automotive refinishing.[5] This line includes Zero VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) options.[5]
  • SOLOR®: Solvent-based liquid colorants for industrial paints, PU/Epoxy flooring, wood stains, and automotive refinish paints.[5]
  • GEOLOR®: Powder pigments, including inorganic (IO series), organic (OR series), mixed (MX series), and hybrid/complex (HB series) pigments. These are used in colored concrete, paints, artificial marble, plastics, and PCM coatings.[5][2] This brand also includes products manufactured using semi-finished materials from Lanxess.[2]

Technology and Eco-Friendly Focus

Wooshin Pigment emphasizes the development of eco-friendly and non-toxic pigments.[5][6] Its AQUALOR® WPZ series offers Zero VOC water-based colorants.[5] The company was recognized with an EY Entrepreneur Of The Year award for its development of eco-friendly pigments and global market targeting.[8][6] The company's R&D efforts also led to the creation of Korea's first dual-use (water and oil-based) liquid pigment in 2008.[2]

Corporate Social Responsibility

Domestically, the company has supported low-income young soldiers with a KRW 100 million donation in 2017 (this specific donation was made by Chairman Kim Sung-kook).[9] Wooshin Pigment has also provided support to multi-child and low-income families in Iksan City.[9] The company operates an in-house employee welfare fund, providing scholarships and tuition support for employees' children.[2][4]

CEO Chang Sung-sook and Chairman Kim Sung-kook have been recognized as "9988 Love Sharer Masters" by the SMEs Love Sharing Foundation for their continuous charitable donations.[3]
