Wookey Brewing Co. is an independent craft brewery based in Wells, Somerset in England. Founded in 2020, the brewery produces award-winning beers and ciders, with a focus on vegan, gluten-free, and alcohol-free options. Wookey Brewing Co. serves both local businesses and individual consumers, and is recognised for its community involvement and sustainable practices.[1]
Logo and Symbolism
[edit]The Wookey Brewing Co. logo features a stylised “W” that symbolises witch’s marks, specifically the double 'VV' symbol, also known as a witch’s mark or Marian mark. This protective symbol is historically found in churches, houses, and the Wookey Hole caves in Somerset. The double 'VV' is believed to stand for “Virgo Virginum” (Virgin of Virgins), serving as an invocation to the Virgin Mary for protection against evil spirits. Such marks were traditionally inscribed on walls, beams, and plasterwork—often near entrances like doorways and windows—to safeguard buildings and their inhabitants.[2]
Jack’s Cider
[edit]In August 2024, the founder of Wookey Brewing Co. introduced Jack’s Cider to the brand’s portfolio. Jack’s Cider proudly carries the legacy of the Cleaves family, one of the oldest family names to originate from Pilton, Somerset. The story of Jack’s Cider[3] is deeply intertwined with the rich history of this picturesque village, where the Cleaves family has been rooted for centuries. Crafted using locally sourced apples, Jack’s Cider celebrates traditional Somerset cider-making and reflects Wookey Brewing Co.’s commitment to heritage, authenticity, and community.
