Volleybeer Volleybeer is a social drinking game that combines skill, speed, and teamwork, involving stacked cans and a ping pong ball. Played in a high-energy setting, the game challenges players to hit targets and drink quickly, while the opposing team races to complete a sequence of bounces to halt their opponents’ drinking. Known for its lively, interactive gameplay, Volleybeer is popular at parties, especially in collegiate settings.
Origins Volleybeer is said to have originated within the Sigma Nu Fraternity, where members developed the game as a creative way to combine the social aspects of traditional drinking games with elements of coordination and teamwork. Originally played informally among fraternity members, the game quickly spread to other social circles, fraternities, and campus events. With its adaptable setup and emphasis on camaraderie, Volleybeer became a mainstay of fraternity gatherings before making its way to wider audiences through word-of-mouth and social media.
Objective The main objective of Volleybeer is for one team to finish all cans of liquid before the opposing team does. When a player hits a stacked can, they begin drinking, but must stop as soon as the opposing team completes a specific bounce sequence and returns the ball to the table.
Equipment Ping Pong Ball: Used to target the stacked cans on the table. Cans: Each player has two cans, stacked on top of each other, which serve as both the target and the drink to finish. Table: A flat surface provides the play area, allowing for the stacking of cans and bouncing of the ping pong ball. Basic Rules Teams: Volleybeer is typically played with two teams of three players each.
Setup: Each player stacks two cans of their beverage on the table.
Gameplay:
A player from the serving team attempts to hit the opposing team’s stacked cans with the ping pong ball. If the ball hits a can, the player who threw the ball immediately starts drinking from one of their own cans. Bounce Sequence:
The defending team must quickly retrieve the ball and initiate a bounce sequence: Player 1 grabs the ball and bounces it to Player 2. Player 2 bounces it to Player 3. Player 3 catches the ball and taps it to the table, signaling the end of the sequence. Once the sequence is completed and the ball touches the table, the drinking player must stop. Winning the Game:
The game continues until one team finishes all of its cans. The first team to finish drinking all cans wins. Game Variations Volleybeer’s rules are flexible and can be modified to suit the preferences of players. Some common variations include:
Challenge Bounce: The final bounce to the table must follow a specific trick or bounce rule, adding a creative challenge.
Safety and Considerations As with any drinking game, Volleybeer is intended to be fun and social. Players are encouraged to drink responsibly, take hydration breaks, and substitute non-alcoholic beverages if needed to keep the game safe and enjoyable.
Popularity and Social Impact Since its beginnings with Sigma Nu Fraternity, Volleybeer has gained popularity among college students and young adults. Its straightforward rules, combined with its emphasis on teamwork, make it a natural fit for social gatherings. The game’s popularity has also spread through social media, where videos and shared experiences highlight its fast-paced, team-oriented fun.
