Vishwas Kumar Ramesh is a British-Indian student who became widely known as the sole survivor of the Air India Flight AI-171 crash on 12 June 2025 in Ahmedabad, India. His survival received international media coverage and widespread public attention.
Early life
[edit]Vishwas Kumar Ramesh was born in the United Kingdom to Indian parents of Gujarati origin. As of 2025, he was a school student living in Leicester, England.
Air India Flight AI-171 crash
[edit]On 12 June 2025, Air India Flight AI-171, operating from London Heathrow Airport to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad, crashed during landing. The aircraft was carrying over 270 passengers and crew. Vishwas was the only known survivor of the accident.[1]
He was found alive by emergency personnel hours after the crash, suffering from serious injuries but conscious and able to respond to medical staff.[2]
Media coverage and reactions
[edit]The story of Vishwas's survival was covered by multiple international news outlets, including the Hindustan Times, The Standard (UK), and Times of India.[3]
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK officials, including the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, publicly acknowledged the incident and expressed sympathy for the victims’ families. Special arrangements were made to transport Vishwas to the UK for further medical treatment.[4]
Aftermath
[edit]Investigations into the crash were launched by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and involved international aviation authorities. Vishwas’s account of the crash was taken as part of the inquiry.
As of mid-2025, he remains under medical care in the UK, with psychological support being provided.
