Violet Sky is an American social media influencer and singer known for her content centering on 1980s fashion, music, and media.

Early life

[edit]

Violet Sky was born in 2000 or 2001[2] and is from New York City.[3] Sky's mother raised her with a lot of things from the 1960s and 1970s.[2] Sky grew up with vintage and retro things, as well as Britney Spears.[2] Sky started to sing when she was three.[4] Sky was introduced to the 1980s from watching the 1985 film Girls Just Want to Have Fun.[2] Afterwards, Sky would watch more movies, listen to music and soundtracks, and collect things from the 1980s.[2]

Career

[edit]

Rise to prominence (2018–2021)

[edit]

Prior to the creation of her Instagram account, a user screenshotted and posted her personal account on Twitter.[4] Sky created her Instagram account in early 2018 when she was a senior in high school, seeking to find friends with the same style as her.[3] As she posted about her 1980s lifestyle, she was able to find people who wore 1980s fashion.[3] When she started her TikTok account by making 1980s fashion videos, she started to gain more fame,[4] realizing that she built a community that liked the decade.[3]

Career debuts (2021–present)

[edit]

Although Sky had been a singer from a young age, she did not release original music early in her career.[3] Shy Talk keyboardist David Bravo discovered Sky after she posted about the band, and invited her to record vocals over music written and produced by Bravo in the 1980s.[3] Her first song, "A Heartbeat Away", was released in 2021 on Spotify.[5] She has since released more music on Spotify building on 1980s instrumentals.[6] Sky has also archived media, especially 1980s film soundtracks that were lost media.[4]

In September 2024, Sky shared a thrift find of a vintage Gunne Sax dress at TJ Maxx on a TikTok video.[7] Sky commented in the video that she almost did not buy the dress, but she did not want to leave it in the store.[7] The video gained more than 300,000 views, and several theories as to how the dress came to be in TJ Maxx were shared in the comment section.[7]

Sky worked as a wardrobe consultant for the music video of the song "My Husband's Ghost (This Christmas)" by Kyle Gordon and Arabella DeFury.[citation needed]

Personal life

[edit]

Sky wears 1980s fashion every day, has permed hair, and drives a 1992 Chevrolet Camaro.[3] When Sky started wearing 1980s fashion, she had to research and learn how to do 1980s hair, learning from videos on YouTube and TikTok.[4] Sky usually visits thrift stores, record stores, and locations filmed for movies in New York City with her friends.[3] She is friends with social media influencer Veronica Wheels (also known as Ronnie Wheels), who is also from New York City.[2][6]
