According to offical sources, the purposes of the association are to gather, unite, organize, and encourage generations of Vietnamese veterans to "preserve and promote the traits and tradition of Uncle Hồ's Army." They would also cooperate with the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, member agencies of the Fatherland Front, and local military agencies in order to "educate the young generation of patriotism, revolutionary heroism, self-reliance, and self-improvement."[1] The association follows the guidelines and policies of the Communist Party of Vietnam, the Constitution and laws of the State, along with the Charter of itself.

History

[edit]

On 6/12/1989, the Politburo of the Communist Party of Vietnam approved the proposal to form an association for Vietnamese veterans. The project was led by Colonel general Song Hào (as the Provisional Chairman),[3][4] and later on 3/02/1990, the Veterans Association of Vietnam was officially created, with Colonel general Trần Văn Quang served as the first chairman[5] and Grand General Võ Nguyên Giáp nicknamed as its "Eternal Honourable Chairman".[6]

The current Chairman of the Association is Colonel general Bế Xuân Trường. Additionally, there are also four Deputy Chairmans: Colonel general Phạm Hồng Hương, Lieutenant general Khuất Việt Dũng, Major general Nguyễn Minh Hoàng,[a] and Comrade Lê Văn Kiểm.[b][5]
