The University of East Anglia Chess Society, known more commonly as the UEA Chess Society, is a student Chess Club founded in 1963 and based at the University of East Anglia - It is the University's joint oldest society. While it is independent from the English Chess Federation[1] and the Norfolk County Chess Association,[2] it is affiliated and does share some events. It is affiliated with the University of East Anglia Students' Union.[3]
The UEA Chess Society exists to promote the game of chess within the University of East Anglia. The Society welcomes players with all levels of experience, from absolute beginners to experienced players. They aim for a friendly and constructive atmosphere to play in, along with an active and varied social scene, that includes regular sober social events. They also regularly hold collaboration events with other groups, including chess societies at other universities.[4]

Events
[edit]The Society hosts a variety of events for members and external players to attend, with events being held on the Monday during the term. Traditionally, events have not been held during the exam period of the summer term, but more relaxed events have been held anyway. Casual Chess is the most popular of the Society's events. Unlike some Clubs who charge for attendance, membership of the Society merits free admittance.
Annual Chess Simultaneous exhibitions are held for members of the Society and the NCCA. The most recent of which was with Shreyas Royal, Britain's Youngest Ever Chess Grandmaster, who was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership to formalise his ongoing relationship with the Society.[5]
The Society has a close relationship with other UEA Societies, namely the Wine and Cheese Society and the Hot Drinks Society.[6] This is epitomised in the annual Chess and Cheese event, hosted by the UEA Chess Society alongside both societies.[7]
League
[edit]The Society's 2023-2025 President, Jared Webb, founded an annual Chess League that is now a staple of the Society's activities. It is a Round-robin tournament run over several weeks, which culminates in a Finals match between the top two players. Competitors join and play games in their own time, the final is scheduled. There are awards for several tiers to ensure players of all levels are involved.
The League's first ever winner was Nik Elliot,[8] who was appointed Captain the following year in honour of his win.
