Ton Büchner (1965, Dutch and Swiss citizen) has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of the real estate group Swiss Prime Site AG [1] [2] and the Swiss industrial group Burckhardt Compression Holding AG [3] since 2020. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Swiss pharmaceutical company Novartis since 2016 [4] and a member of the Shareholders’ Committee of Voith GmbH & Co. KGaA, Germany, since 2014. [5]

Life

Büchner studied civil engineering at Delft University of Technology and graduated with a Master's degree in Engineering in 1988. He started his career as a civil engineer in offshore construction at Allseas Engineering, Netherlands, and then became a project manager at RJ Brown and Associates, Singapore and at John Brown Engineers and Constructors (until 1992).

After earning his MBA from the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Lausanne in 1993, he joined the Swiss industrial firm Sulzer in 1994 as Strategic Development Manager. By the end of 1995, he was appointed Chief Representative for Sulzer in China, a role he held until 1998. He then progressed through several senior leadership roles within the company—including President of Sulzer Turbomachinery Services and President of Sulzer Pumps—before becoming Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sulzer AG in February 2007. He served as CEO until October 2011.[6]

From 2012 to 2017, he was Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of the Management Board of AkzoNobel NV in the Netherlands.[7][8]

Büchner serves on the Executive Advisory Board of the WORLD.MINDS Foundation, where he contributes to global discussions on corporate leadership, industrial innovation, and sustainable business strategy.[9]
