Book: The Tomaj-Quni Family Dollc

Authors: Luz Tomaj and Mikel Çuni

The Tomaj-Quni Family (Albanian: Familja Tomaj-Quni) is an Albanian family originating from the village of Dollc in the municipality of Klina, in western Kosovo. According to family oral history and the monograph, the Tomaj-Quni family is remembered for involvement in local resistance movements, strong community ties, and preservation of regional customs in the Dukagjin area.

Origins and Settlement

[edit]

The family tradition traces its roots to the 19th century, with ancestral connections to the region historically referred to as Dardania. In the latter half of that century, the family settled in the village of Dollc. Earlier settlements included locations such as Vrella near Istog, Marmull in the municipality of Gjakova, and Klinë. The earliest documented members include four brothers: Tomë, Qun, Tahir, and Kolë Beqa. The surnames "Tomaj" and "Quni" are derived from these individuals’ names.

Family Structure and Genealogy

[edit]

The family structure is extensively detailed in the monograph Familja Tomaj-Quni, Dollc, written by Luz Tomaj and Mikel Çuni (2025, not yet officially published). The genealogical line includes multiple generations and documents various branches of the family, particularly the descendants of Tomë and Qun Beqa. According to the monograph, the family was structured around extended households that commonly shared land and responsibilities.

Historical Involvement

[edit]

The monograph documents family involvement in regional events during the Yugoslav era, based on oral testimonies and family records. Family narratives mention incidents from 1959 and 1968 involving political tensions, documented in family archives and testimonies. These events have been presented in the family’s oral history and documented with photographs and testimonies in the monograph. However, full verification from independent sources remains pending (?).

Cultural Significance

[edit]

The monograph notes that the family maintained a kulla (traditional Albanian stone tower) which served as a venue for odë burrash, preserving oral traditions. According to the family’s account, the tower associated with Nue Quni was destroyed during the Kosovo War in 1998.

Relations and Alliances

[edit]

Over generations, the Tomaj-Quni family[1] established marital and social alliances with numerous families in surrounding villages, including Gremnik, Cerovik, Pogragjë, Zllakuqan, and others. These alliances were traditionally arranged and contributed to the family’s social standing in the region.

Notable Mentions

[edit]

Historical accounts mention interactions between family members and several notable figures, including Anton Çetta[2], Ibrahim Rugova[3], and Papa Pius XI[4] (via the local Catholic delegation to the Vatican in 1925, led by Beqir Toma). The accuracy and context of some of these interactions require further confirmation (?).

The Monograph

[edit]

The family’s history is documented in the book Familja Tomaj-Quni, Dollc by Luz Tomaj[5] and Mikel Çuni. The book was prepared with the editorial support of Prof. Mikel Çuni and reviewed by Prof. Hajdin Morina. According to the authors, the project received support from the Municipality of Klina and the Directorate for Culture, Youth, and Sports, as noted in the foreword of the monograph. The book presents a mixture of narrative history, genealogical records, and testimonies, aiming to preserve the family's memory and contribution to the collective heritage of Kosovo.
