1833:

• The Christian College at New Albany, largely regarded as a diploma mill, offers courses, but not degrees, in medicine. It closes the same year.

1837

• Vincennes University's medical department is founded.

1838

• Vincennes' medical department closes.

1841

• The LaPorte University School of Medicine (LPSM) is founded.

1846

• LPSM is renamed to the Indiana Medical College.

1849:

• The Indiana Central Medical College is founded in Indianapolis as the medical department of Indiana Asbury University (now DePauw University).
• The Medical College of Evansville is founded.

1851:

• The Indiana Medical College merges into the Indiana Central Medical College.

1852:

• The Indiana Central Medical College closes.

1854:

• The Medical College of Evansville temporarily closes.

1869:

• The Indiana Medical College (unrelated to the former LPSM) is founded in Indianapolis as an outgrowth of the Indianapolis Academy of Medicine.

1900s

1900:

• The Curtis Physiomedical Institute closes.
• The Eclectic Medical College of Indiana opens.

1901:

• The Chicago Eclectic Medical College is founded in Chicago.

1902:

• The Valparaiso University School of Medicine (VUSM) opens.
• The Chicago Eclectic Medical College is renamed to the American College of Medicine and Surgery and purchased by VUSM.

1903:

• The Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) is founded in Bloomington.
• Talks begin for the Medical College of Indiana (MCI) to become IUSM's Indianapolis campus.

1904:

• The Central College of Physicians and Surgeons (CCPS) requests to become Purdue University's medical school; the offer is rejected by the Purdue trustees not wanting to interfere with the talks between the MCI and IUSM.
• Talks between the MCI and IUSM are indefinitely postponed.

1905:

• The MCI submits the same proposal it negotiated with IUSM to the Purdue trustees; the offer is accepted and it becomes the "Indiana Medical College, the School of Medicine of Purdue University."
• The CCPS joins the Purdue School of Medicine.
• The Fort Wayne College of Medicine transfers equipment and personnel to Indianapolis and joins the Purdue School of Medicine.

1906:

• The State College of Physicians and Surgeons is founded in Indianapolis by Indiana University supporters. Clinical faculty are recruited from those unhappy with the arrangement with Purdue.

1907:

• The American College of Medicine and Surgery is renamed to the Chicago College of Medicine and Surgery (CCM&S).

1908:

• Purdue and IU reach an agreement: IUSM's Indianapolis campus is founded as a merger of the Purdue School of Medicine and the State College of Physicians and Surgeons.
• The Eclectic Medical College of Indiana closes.

1909:

• The Physiomedical College of Indiana closes.

1917:

• VUSM closes as Valparaiso University declares bankruptcy; the CCM&S is sold to Loyola University Chicago, becoming the Stritch School of Medicine in 1948.

1958:

• IUSM's Bloomington campus closes.

1968:

• IUSM's Bloomington campus reopens.
• IUSM's South Bend and West Lafayette campuses open.

1971:

• IUSM's Muncie and Terre Haute campuses open.

1972:

• IUSM's Evansville and Gary campuses open.

1981:

• IUSM's Fort Wayne campus opens.

2000s

2010:

• The Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MUCOM) is founded in Indianapolis. It is renamed to the Tom and Julie Wood College of Osteopathic Medicine, following a donation by Tom and Julie Wood, Indianapolis natives.
