Comment: zero improvement since previous decline? Theroadislong (talk) 15:28, 15 February 2025 (UTC)
Comment: We need to see significant coverage of this in multiple secondary sources; of those currently cited, only the DR piece qualifies, and it alone isn't enough. DoubleGrazing (talk) 15:29, 11 February 2025 (UTC)
![]() Thor Brewery in 2020 | |
The Thor Brewery was a brewery in central Randers, Denmark. While the brewery has been shut down, the main building is still standing and is currently a Flammen restaurant.[1]
The Thor Brewery was known for its production of Thor branded beers and sodas which are still sold today under the company ‘Royal Unibrew’.
History
[edit]The construction of the brewery began in 1850 by Swedish adventurer Johan Peter Lindahl, who introduced Bavarian beer to the area. In 1855 Lindahl left Denmark for America,[2] seemingly after the brewery went bankrupt [3] and the engineer Christian Emil Synnestvedt bought the brewery and rebranded it the next year. Therefore, the brewery officially began in 1856 under the name ‘'Synnestvedts Bayerske Ølbryggeri’' (Synnestvedts Bavarian Beer Brewery).[4]
In 1873, it got the name ‘Thor Brewery’.[5]
In 1898 Thor Brewery bought ‘A/S Randers Bryghus’ and therefore became one of the biggest breweries in Randers.[6] In 1920 the expansion continued with a modernisation of the brewery along with another expansion. [7]
In 1962, Thor brewery, along with other Danish breweries, planned to start a Danish brewery in North Rhodesia, expanding their operation outside of Denmark. However, the plans never went anywhere, since the Rhodesian government demanded they pay five times the price that other local companies would have paid.[8]
In 1977 Thor Brewery, along with Ceres Brewery and the Aalborg Brewery, formed ‘Jyske Bryggerier A/S’,[9] which later merged with Faxe Brewery in 1989, now known as ‘Royal Unibrew’. [10]
In 2003, the Thor brewery closed down, since the brewery was too expensive to keep going compared to the small outcome it gave Royal Unibrew.[11] Thor branded beer is still sold by Royal Unibrew, however, it is now being produced at the Albani Brewery in Odense.
Thor Brewery Now
[edit]The hill where the thor brewery used to be located on, Thor's Bakke (Thor Hill), currently houses different buildings like a cinema, Thor Tower and the old brewery building, which is now owned by ‘flammen restaurant’.[12]
While being a product of the past, the thor brewery is still a part of the identity of Randers.
