Thomas R. DeMark is an American technical analyst and creator of the DeMARK Indicators, a set of technical analysis indicators used to identify potential price reversals.[1] He is the founder and CEO of DeMARK Analytics, LLC.[2]

Career

[edit]

DeMark has worked as a technical analyst for over fifty years, advising investors such as Steven A. Cohen, Paul Tudor Jones, and David Goel, according to Bloomberg and The Washington Post.[1][3] In 2020, he received the CMT Association Annual Award for lifetime contributions to technical analysis, presented in 2023 during the association's 50th-anniversary event.[4]

DeMARK Indicators

[edit]

The DeMARK Indicators are technical analysis tools that identify potential price reversals across markets like stocks, commodities, and forex.[5] Notable indicators include TD Sequential, TD Combo, TD Line, and TD Range Expansion Index (REI). These tools are accessible to traders and investors through platforms such as Bloomberg Terminal and Refinitiv.[1] A 2008 book, DeMark Indicators by Jason Perl, describes their application and received a silver medal in the 2009 Axiom Business Book Awards for business literature.[6]

Academic validation

[edit]

A 2017 study published in the Journal of Investment Strategies evaluated DeMARK Indicators across 21 commodity futures markets and found their signals statistically significant in anticipating short-term price movements.[7]

Reception

[edit]

DeMark's indicators have been discussed in financial media for their market-timing applications. In 2022, Forbes reported on a DeMark S&P 500 buy signal, noting its distinction from moving average-based indicators.[8][9] In 2024, MarketWatch noted his models signaling caution before a holiday weekend.[10]

Personal life

[edit]

DeMark resides in the United States. His son, Thomas DeMark Jr., is CEO of Symbolik, a financial analytics firm that integrates DeMARK Indicators.[11]
