Theresia de Coninck (1732 – 31 December 1795) was a Cistercian nun and served as the last Abbess of Rozendaal Abbey from 1789 to 1795.
Biography
[edit]De Coninck was elected in 1788 as the successor to Abbess Agnes Haegens. She was appointed on May 2, 1789, and installed on April 6, 1790. At that time, the community had more than forty nuns. On July 16, 1794, French troops took control of the abbey, and on March 4, 1795, the property of the wealthy abbey was seized. The abbey owned more than twenty farms and two windmills. At that point, Abbess de Coninck had already fled to the north along with five other nuns.[1][2][3]
She died later that year at the age of 63. After her death, no new abbess could be elected. On June 15, 1796, an expulsion order was issued, and the remaining nuns were forced to leave the abbey on January 7, 1797.[1][2]
