The Slots is a Czech indie rock band from Prague, active since 2001. Originally named Slot And Shade, the band performed under that name until 2006, when they officially rebranded to The Slots.[1] As of 2025, the band is preparing its third studio album.
History
[edit]Formation and Early Years (2001–2006)
[edit]The band was founded in January 2001 under the name Slot And Shade. The name, coined during high school, referred to the television mechanism of "slot and shade," but was primarily chosen for its sound. The name was changed prior to the debut album release due to frequent mispronunciations and the fact that people already referred to them as "The Slots".[2]
Baby Box (2006)
[edit]In 2006, the band released their debut album Baby Box.[3] The album featured 13 tracks and two remixes, including the single "Minea", whose remix by Juanita Juarez was awarded Remix of the Year 2005 by F:lter magazine. It was produced by Aleš Zenkl, known for collaborations with Miro Žbirka and Lety Mimo.
The original lineup included Erik Stevenson (vocals, guitar), Tomáš Vondráček (guitar), Petr Kolečko (clarinet, saxophone), Štěpán Drábek (bass, vocals), and Pavel Kaňák (drums). A notable feature of the band’s early sound was the integration of clarinet into melodic guitar-driven songs.[4]
Plastic Culture and Lineup Changes (2007–2011)
[edit]At the end of 2007, the lineup underwent major changes. Only Stevenson and Kaňák remained from the original lineup due to creative and logistical differences.[5]
The new members favored tighter, melody-driven songwriting. The revised lineup included Stevenson, Kaňák, guitarist Tomáš Břínek a.k.a. Gerry a.k.a. TMBK (well known Czech meme author), second guitarist Dave, and bassist Belda.[6]
In January 2009, they released their second album Plastic Culture, which received stronger critical acclaim than their debut. It included tracks such as "Expectations", "Nobody Knows", and "Evaporated".[7]
In 2010, guitarist Dave left and was replaced by Petr Machy. This marked the beginning of a decline in live performances.
Hiatus (2011–2020)
[edit]From 2011 to 2020, the band performed only sporadically, mostly for annual Christmas shows. During this period, Stevenson was also a member of the London-based band ''Tomorrow Honey''.
Return and New Material (2020–2025)
[edit]The band resumed studio work, releasing several singles and preparing a new album. Adam Kořínek replaced Gerry on guitar. In September 2021, The Slots released "I Don't Need You", their first single in 12 years, produced by Gordon Raphael (known for work with The Strokes) at Andel Sound Studio. It was followed by the singles "Maybe It's Love" (2022) and "Fall" (2023).[8][9][10]
The latest single "Once We Know It" was released in June 2025.[11]
