Matt Johnston (or The Narcissist Cookbook) is a Scottish solo artist whose music consists of folk punk and spoken word elements. They[1] have self-described their music as "folk-punk oratory[2]". As of October 2024, they have amassed 107.5 thousand monthly listeners on Spotify.[3]

MYTH was released on December 17th, 2024.[9] Johnston has described it as "a story about an isolated island, a hundred thousand burning pages, and a forest that never existed." The album artwork is an illustration by Kay Nielsen titled "And then she lay on a little green patch in the midst of the gloomy thick wood".[10]

The song was released on December 11th, 2018. Johnston has called it "a story about a toxic relationship and a creation myth."[13]

'Y'all Ship Me With A Gremlin Boy'

The song was released on May 22nd, 2020. It resulted from a thread on Twitter from April 3rd, of which a screenshot was taken and used for the song art.

'The Absolute State of the Union'

Described as "a story about a toppled statue, a 'progressive liberal', and the Greatest Briton"[14], the single was released on Aug 22nd, 2020.

Podcast

Johnston co-hosts a podcast with Bug Hunter (band) called Jam Mechanics in which they use self-given challenges in order to write songs.[15][16] There are, as of March 2025, three seasons, each comprising of ten episodes and a "retrospective".

Personal Life

According to their song Broken People, Johnston is a vegetarian.

They are a fan of Doctor Who.[17][18]
