The Curator is an incarnation of the Doctor, the protagonist of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who. He was portrayed by Tom Baker,[1] who previously portrayed the Fourth Doctor on the programme from 1974 to 1981.[2]

Within the series narrative, the Doctor is a millennia-old alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, with somewhat unknown origins, who travels in time and space in the TARDIS, frequently with companions. At the end of each incarnation's life, the Doctor regenerates, changing their physical appearance and aspects of their personality. This plot device has allowed a number of actors to portray different incarnations of the Doctor over the show's long run.

The Curator is a future version of the Doctor,[a] who has retired from travelling in time and currently acts as a curator of the National Gallery.[2][3][4]

Appearances

[edit]

The Curator made his first and only appearance in "The Day of the Doctor",[5] encountering the Eleventh Doctor in the Under Gallery. He reveals to the Eleventh Doctor that one of the three-dimensional paintings is called "Gallifrey Falls No More", hinting that the fact that Gallifrey survived. He also states that they find '[themselves] revisiting a few [faces]', foreshadowing the return of David Tennant with the Fourteenth Doctor.[2][6]

In other media

[edit]

The Curator also makes an appearance in the audio drama Doctor Who: Stranded 1.[7]

Creation and conception

[edit]

Baker announced his appearance in the special, stating "I am in the special. I'm not supposed to tell you that, but I tell you that very willingly and specifically; the BBC told me not to tell anybody but I'm telling you straight away."[8]

Notes

[edit]
  1. ^ The Curator's place in the timeline has not been officially revealed. Some have speculated that the Curator is an alternate version of the Doctor due to the reveal of bi-generation in "The Giggle".
