Alexthedoodler (artist)

[edit]

Alex James Walton (born 14 March 2003), known professionally as Alexthedoodler, is a British doodle artist based in London. Known for his distinctive character-based art and expressive doodle collages, Alex is part of a growing wave of neurodivergent artists bringing fresh perspectives to contemporary illustration. He creates both digital and traditional pen-and-paper works, often drawing quickly and intuitively. His art explores themes such as identity, emotion, and neurodiversity.

Early life and education

[edit]

Alex James Walton was born at Ealing Hospital in London. He attended St. Mark’s Preschool, Hanwell (2006–2008), followed by Drayton Green Primary School (2008–2014) and Woodlane High School (2014–2019), a specialist institution supporting students with additional learning needs. He studied at William Morris Sixth Form (2019–2020), then progressed to West London College (2020–2022), where he continued developing his interest in creative expression.

Career

[edit]

Internships and work experience

[edit]

From 2022 to 2023, Walton participated in a supported internship program that included several placements in public and cultural institutions:

  • Kensington Old Town Hall (September 2022 – January 2023): Worked in the Housing and Benefits Team, supporting administrative processes.
  • Chelsea Registrars Office (January – April 2023): Assisted in managing appointments related to births, deaths, and marriages.
  • The Design Museum, London (April – June 2023): Contributed to front-of-house and visitor services operations.
  • The Cartoon Museum, London (September – December 2023): Worked as a Front Desk Assistant, where he engaged with museum visitors and learned more about the professional illustration community.

Following this placement, Alex reached out to the Cartoon Museum with a proposal to sell his merchandise through the venue. With the museum’s support, he began partnering with the merchandise supplier Star Editions, officially launching his own branded products—a milestone in his career as an independent artist.

Artistic style and themes

[edit]

Alexthedoodler is known for a vibrant, bold doodle style that blends spontaneous sketching with vivid character design. His work is primarily created on an iPad using his finger as the drawing tool, a method that allows for speed, flexibility, and a sense of immediacy. He is known to complete full character pieces in as little as five minutes.

Inspired by artists such as Jon Burgerman, Keith Haring, and Pablo Picasso, his drawings often feature recurring motifs of faces, figures, and emotional expressions. One of his best-known collage works, Feelings, features dozens of emotive faces and has been praised for its simplicity and emotional depth.

Notable characters

[edit]

Alex has created a cast of recurring characters that appear frequently in his doodles, collectively forming a conceptual world often referred to as Doodle World. These include:

  • Wavy Hair Boy
  • Mr. Autism
Jon Burgerman is one of Alex’s favourite Doodle Artists in March 2024 Alex was lucky enough to visit Jon Burgerman’s Studio in Greenpoint Brooklyn after Alex emailed him to say he was in New York. So he went to Jon’s Art Studio but was too shy to talk and silent the whole time doodling in Jon Burgerman’s Art Studio. And Alex thought he was dreaming when he was in Jon’s Art Studio
This is one of Pablo Picasso’s Work Old Woman from 1901 and Alex loves His work and Picasso did Doodle style in his work sometimes which is his favourite style.
I chose this because I love to doodle and I’ve been doodling since I was a teenager so this kind of tells me what it’s like to be doodling from a young age.
  • Angry Susan
  • Spikey Mikey
  • Blobby

These characters are emblematic of Alexthedoodler’s interest in emotions, individuality, and neurodiverse identity.

Public reception

[edit]

While Alexthedoodler has developed a niche following, particularly among neurodivergent art audiences, his work continues to grow in recognition through social media, museum partnerships, and independent merchandising. His art has been shared within online creative communities and embraced for its accessible style and emotional authenticity.

Artistic goals

[edit]

While committed to doodling as his main form of artistic expression, Alex has expressed an interest in expanding into new media, including portraiture and landscape painting. He cites his sister, Sophie Boulter, as a key influence. Boulter is known for her traditional paintings, though she does not actively post her artwork online.

Personal life

[edit]

Alex is autistic and has spoken openly about how art became a therapeutic and expressive outlet for him as a teenager. He continues to advocate for creativity as a tool for self-expression and connection, especially within the neurodivergent community.
