Te Motu Vineyard is a winery located in the Onetangi Valley on Waiheke Island in New Zealand. Established in 1988 by the Dunleavy family, it is one of the earlier wineries contributing to the island’s modern wine industry.[1]

History

[edit]

The vineyard was established in 1988, with its first plantings focusing on Bordeaux grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. Its name, "Te Motu," derives from the original Māori name for Waiheke Island, meaning "the island".[1]

During the 1990s, Te Motu became part of a growing wine scene on Waiheke Island, alongside wineries such as Stonyridge and Goldie Estate. According to WineFolio, Te Motu is considered a significant contributor to the region's reputation for producing high-quality red wines.[1]

Wines

[edit]

Te Motu produces a range of wines, primarily red blends alongside varietal bottlings of Syrah and Chardonnay. Its flagship wine, known as "Te Motu", is a Bordeaux-style blend that has received attention within New Zealand wine media and competitions.[2]

The vineyard's wines have been recognized at events such as the New Zealand Wine Awards, and reviewed by local publications and wine commentators.[3]

The Shed at Te Motu

[edit]

The estate also operates a restaurant, The Shed at Te Motu, which offers seasonal menus based on locally sourced ingredients. It has been featured in several New Zealand media outlets for its food, wine pairings, and vineyard setting.[4] In 2021, Metro magazine included the restaurant in its list of top Auckland dining experiences.[5]
