Tatyana Garkavaya (born 1983) is a Bulgarian journalist of Ukrainian descent, writer, researcher, translator, and web designer. She is best known as the founder of the award-winning networking platform Cultural Insights, which she runs in English, Bulgarian, and Italian. Her works have received multiple national and international distinctions in journalism, ethnography, public relations, and socially engaged art.[1][2].

Biography

Tatyana Garkavaya was born in Tokmak, Ukraine, into a Bulgarian-Ukrainian family. She studied in Russian, Ukrainian, and Bulgarian schools across the Zaporozhie region. Fluent in Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Russian, English, and Italian, she has worked for over two decades across diverse communication fields such as journalism, PR, and digital marketing. In 2007, she graduated with distinction in Journalism from Zaporizhzhia National University. She later completed a master's degree in Public and Corporate Communication at the University of Milan (Italy), and earned professional certifications from the Digital Marketing Institute (Ireland) and the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (UK). Journalism Career Tatyana Garkavaya started her journalistic career from the very first days of her studies at university in 2001, writing articles for different newspapers in her home regions. Social end environmental topics were her main specializations.[3] She covered one of the most prominent citizen science project in the Zaporizhzhia region about the findings of the mammoths' remnants[4] Additionally, local anniversary almanacs about famous individuals of Tokmak regularly includes Tatyana Garkavaya's interviews with prominent local sportspeople.[5] In 2011, Tatyana Garkavaya moved to Moscow where she started working for the Kazakh Media Company Slovo preparing content for its printed and digital resources. Environmental issues[6] , human rights conflicts[7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] and social entrepreneurship initiatives[16][17] in the Central Asia, Russia and Ukraine were her main specializations. Garkavaya also explored links between modern arts and political activism by covering a meeting of Russian oppositional leader, lawyer Alexei Navalny and Kazakh oppositional figure, theatre director Bolat Atabaev,[18] a creative performance of Asian artists in Saint Petersburg,[19] and the case of Pussy Riot.[20]

Cultural and Environmental Advocacy

Since 2019, Garkavaya has been actively involved in environmental and cultural advocacy across Bulgaria. Her master's thesis on the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) initiative served as a foundation for ongoing advocacy work[21].

In partnership with organizations like Plovdiv 2019, Bulgarian Society for the Protection of Birds and Green Balkans, she has led workshops and campaigns focused on biodiversity conservation, volunteer engagement, and inclusive communication.[22][23] Her efforts have contributed to European Capital of Culture initiatives at Plovdiv 2019 and Galway 2020, where she worked as a multilingual content creator.[24] In 2020, she launched Cultural Insights, an award-winning multilingual platform dedicated to sustainable tourism, biodiversity conservation, and intercultural dialogue. Creative practitioners from the Roma community in Bulgaria educational activist Diana Charmakova from Sliven[25] and actrees and poet Donka Kioseva[26] were featured among international artists, designers and environmentalists. The online project by Tatyana Garkavaya quickly gained traction for its detailed coverage of grassroots conservation efforts and was recognized in Bulgarian journalism and participatory art competitions[27].

At the beginning, the Cultural Insights focused on the creative practices in new ECoCs. Tatyana Garkavaya continued promoting sustainable initiatives within ECoCs through travel notes from personal trips and interviews with creative practitioners from Plovdiv 2019, Galway 2020, Kaunas 2022, and Veszprem-Balaton 2023.[28][29] Gradually, the Cultural Insights developed a strong environmental dimensions through the support of activities of such Bulgarian projects as the Young Caritas Sofia.[30] Her two-year ethnographic research project, Mapping Sustainable Holidays in Bulgaria, documented ten volunteer birdwatching projects and won different accolades.[31][32] One of the photos taken by Tatyana Garkavaya during her study at the The Nature Conservation Camp 'Atanasovsko Lake' (the oldest Bulgarian conservation vacation[33]),.[34]

Publications

Tatyana Garkavaya has written extensively on eco and cultural collaboration, environmental conservation, and sustainability. She authored the award-winning book Cultural Insights into Volunteer Conservation Bird Watching Vacations in Bulgaria. It's Not Only About Birds.[35] It has become the first systematic record of nature conservation Bulgarian vacations some of which have over 30 years of history. Overall, Tatyana researched and covered 10 birdwatching projects in different Bulgarian regions in the framework of her two-year-long ethnographic study 'Mapping Sustainable Holidays in Bulgaria'[36]
