THC Hurley (Tennis and Hockeyclub Hurley) is a Dutch field hockey club from Amstelveen. The club competes at the highest level (Hoofdklasse) 2024-2025 both the women and the men.[1]
Hurley was founded on July 12, 1932, in Amsterdam. The first location was the Van Hoogendorpstraat in the Staatsliedenbuurt neighborhood. Over the years, the club moved successively from the Museumplein and the Zuidelijke Wandelweg in 1948 to the Amsterdamse Bos.
A small shack served as the clubhouse and that also became the name of the club magazine: “The Shack.” But developments were rapid. In 1962 a new clubhouse was designed by the architect Clim Meyer. In 1983 the first artificial turf field was built and in 1999 the third.
Hurley continued to grow and, with over 2,000 members, is now one of the largest field hockey clubs in the Netherlands.A decision for yet another new clubhouse was necessary, because with its large membership Hurley had grown completely out of its clubhouse. On September 21, 2003, the new clubhouse was opened.
The Name
[edit]The club's name comes from the originally Irish ball game “Hurling.”Hurling is a combination of rugby, soccer and field hockey, playing with a hurley, a type of stick. It is a very fast, rough sport, though rarely involving serious injuries.[1] Hurling as a popular game already appeared in Celtic mythology. To this day, annual hurling championships are still held in Ireland.
Uniform
[edit]Hurley's home jersey consists of a blue-and-white shirt with club badge, dark blue pants/skirt and dark blue socks with an embroidered club badge on the front. Hurley's away jersey consists of a red-dark red shirt with club badge and a white collar, white pants/skirt and white socks with an embroidered club badge on the front.
As of the 2018/2019 season, Hurley has switched to the Osaka brand in terms of apparel.
Tophockey
[edit]Ladies 1 played in the Transitional Class at least from the 2006-2007 season until they were promoted to the big league at the end of the 2009-2010 season. In the big league they moved up to a mid-tier position and they finished in 6th place in season 2012-2013. In the 2013-2014 season they reached their best ranking ever: 5th.
Men's 1 played frequently in the Transitional Class until the 2008-2009 season. In the 2009-2010 season, Heren 1 played in the Hoofdklasse. In the last game of the season they lost in a direct game to SCHC, causing Hurley to relegate again to the Overgangsklasse. In the 2010-2011 season Hurley promoted back to the big league after an exciting “play-in/play-out series” of 6 games against Schaerweijde and HDM respectively. It was then 11 years since Hurley last played with the two highest teams in this class at the same time. On Sunday, May 5, 2013, Hurley again became champion of the Overgangsklasse through a 9-3 victory over Push. As a result, in the 2013-2014 season, Women's 1 and Men's 1 both played in the big league again. Men's 1 managed to stay in the big league in this season for the first time in 12 years without play-outs: they finished in 8th place.
