Draft:Tōkaidō Main Line (Nagoya Area)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a split from Tokaido Main Line spun out in order to make major expansions without suffering from article size. Technically, JR Central splits the Tokaido Main Line into Atami-Toyohashi and Toyohashi-Maibara. Corresponding with the jawiki article with a similar title, this split will cover the line with focus on the Toyohashi-Maibara section. For this reason, the article will end up covering sections in other prefectures, like Gifu and Shiga.

The Tōkaidō Main Line (Japanese: 東海道本線, romanized: Tōkaidō-honsen) is one of the most important railway corridors in Japan, connecting the major cities of Tokyo and Kobe via Shizuoka, Nagoya, Kyoto and Osaka. The line, with termini at Tokyo and Kobe stations, is 589.5 km (366.3 mi) long, not counting its many freight feeder lines around the major cities. The high-speed Tokaido Shinkansen largely parallels the line.

JR Central operates a portion of the line from Maibara Station to Atami Station. The company splits their part of the line into two sections, the Shizuoka area and the Nagoya area. The two sections are separated by Toyohashi Station, and the Nagoya area section ends at Maibara.

The first section of the line in the Nagoya area

The section of the line between Gifu Station and Toyohashi Station faces competition from Meitetsu, a private railway operator. Since the privatization of Japanese National Railways, JR Central has worked to regain passengers.

History

[edit]

The first section of the main line to be constructed was the section from Atsuta to Taketoyo, which opened on March 1, 1886. This was also the first ever railway to be established in Aichi Prefecture. The line was then connected with the other completed sections of the main line, with the Atsuta-Ōgaki section opened on April 1, 1887, and Ōbu-Hamamatsu on September 1, 1888. The section opened in 1888 led to the branch line continuing to Taketoyo to be split off to the Taketoyo Line. With the completion of the section between Sekigahara and Ōtsu on July 1, 1889, the Tokaido Main Line was completed, and Shimbashi was connected with Kōbe in a single line.

Station history

[edit]

Since the opening of the line, additional infill stations were opened, and stations were relocated.
