Draft:Svetlana Barkanova

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dr. Svetlana Barkanova is a Canadian particle physicist and professor at the School of Science and the Environment at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. She is internationally recognized for her work in subatomic physics theory, and for her equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) leadership in science[1]. Dr. Barkanova was appointed as one of three inaugural NSERC Chairs for Inclusion in Science and Engineering - Atlantic (CISE-Atlantic) in 2023, a program that concentrates on reshaping STEM education and research environments to support underrepresented groups in Atlantic Canada [1][2][3][4].

Academic and Research Career

[edit]

Dr. Barkanova’s research focuses on theoretical subatomic physics, particularly the precise evaluation of electroweak radiative corrections. She is part of the international MOLLER experiment (Measurement Of a Lepton-Lepton Electroweak Reaction), an ambitious collaboration involving scientists from Canada, the USA, Germany, France, Italy, and Mexico. The MOLLER project aims to detect new fundamental interactions and particles, which could help explain phenomena such as dark matter[3]. At Grenfell Campus, Dr. Barkanova and her collaborators, including Dr. A. Aleksejevs, have introduced novel computing methods that enabled unprecedented precision in electroweak calculations[3].

Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Decolonalization (EDID) Leadership

[edit]

Dr. Barkanova is a pioneer of EDI(D) initiatives in science and physics, in particular with women and indigenous outreach programs. As an NSERC CISE-Atlantic Chairholder, Dr. Barkanova is a leader in systemic EDI efforts across the region. Together with Dr. Stephanie MacQuarrie (Cape Breton University) and Dr. Kevin Hewitt (Dalhousie University), she is working to transform STEM environments to better support students from equity-deserving groups, promote equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) through outreach, education policy development, and tenure-track reform, and advance inclusion through long-term partnerships with community organizations[2][4]. Dr. Barkanova is also the Canada Team Leader for the International Conference for Women in Physics[5].

Outreach Programs

[edit]

Dr. Svetlana Barkanova Svetlana aims to build networks linking community, academia, and industry through CISE-Atlantic’s Physics in the Rural Classroom (PiRC), which supports rural Atlantic Canadian educators with online physics workshops and career sessions for Grades 7–12[2]. In partnership with the Qalipu First Nation, Dr. Barkanova developed a science outreach program for girls, Indigenous youth and students in rural and remote areas[4]. Her outreach efforts consistently engage hundreds of students each year, fostering early interest in STEM and building inclusive, culturally relevant pathways into science[3][4].

Leadership and Affiliations

[edit]

Dr. Barkanova serves on the Board of Directors of Science Atlantic, where she contributes to advancing inclusive practices in post-secondary science education and research. Her leadership has helped bridge community, academic, and industry sectors, with a focus on ensuring that geography, gender, and background are no longer barriers to STEM participation[2][4].
