  • Comment: Please read very, very carefully the criteria for academic notability WP:NPROF. The article needs to demonstrate that she is notable without bragging. For instance the term internationally recognised is attempted bragging, what we call WP:PEACOCK. This guide may be useful. Ldm1954 (talk) 18:11, 13 July 2025 (UTC)

Dr. Svetlana Barkanova is a Canadian particle physicist and professor at the School of Science and the Environment at Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada. She is internationally recognized for her work in subatomic physics theory, and for her equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) leadership in science.[1] Dr. Barkanova was appointed as one of three inaugural NSERC Chairs for Inclusion in Science and Engineering - Atlantic (CISE-Atlantic) in 2023, a program that concentrates on reshaping STEM education and research environments to support underrepresented groups in Atlantic Canada.[1][2][3][4]

Research

[edit]

Dr. Barkanova’s research focuses on theoretical subatomic physics. She is part of the international MOLLER experiment (Measurement Of a Lepton-Lepton Electroweak Reaction), a collaboration involving scientists from Canada, USA, Germany, France, Italy, and Mexico, which aims to detect new particles and interaction to help explain phenomena such as dark matter.[3] Dr. Barkanova and her colleagues have introduced novel computing methods that enabled extremely high precision in electroweak calculations.[3]

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Leadership

[edit]

Dr. Barkanova is a pioneer of EDI initiatives in science and physics, in particular with women and indigenous outreach programs. As an NSERC CISE-Atlantic Chair holder since 2023, Dr. Barkanova is a leader in systemic EDI efforts across the Atlantic Canadian region. Together in a team with two other chair holders, Dr. Stephanie MacQuarrie and Dr. Kevin Hewitt, she is working to transform STEM environments to better support students from equity-deserving groups, promote equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) through outreach, and STEM education policy development.[2][4] Dr. Barkanova is also the Canada Team Leader for the International Conference for Women in Physics.[5]

Outreach Programs

[edit]

Dr. Barkanova aims to build networks linking community, academia, and industry through CISE-Atlantic’s "Physics in the Rural Classroom (PiRC)", which supports rural Atlantic Canadian educators with online physics workshops and career sessions for Grades 7–12.[2] In partnership with the Qalipu First Nation, Dr. Barkanova developed a science outreach program for girls, Indigenous youth and students in rural and remote areas.[4] Her outreach efforts engage hundreds of students each year.[4]
