Suzanne Loftus is an American–Swiss scholar and educator in international security studies. She serves as Associate Professor of National Security Strategy at the National War College (National Defense University) and is a Global Fellow and member of the Advisory Council at the Kennan Institute of the Wilson Center. Her research focuses on Russian foreign and domestic policy, transatlantic security, and great power competition.
Early life and education
[edit]Loftus holds dual citizenship in the United States and Switzerland.[citation needed] She earned a Ph.D. in International Studies from the University of Miami in 2018, with a dissertation on nationalism and traditional values in Putin's Russia.[1] She also holds M.A. and B.A. degrees from the University of Miami, a Certificate in International Affairs and Multilateral Governance from the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva, and an M.A. in Management and Leadership from Webster University Geneva.[2]
Academic career
[edit]From 2019 to 2023, Loftus was Associate Professor of Security Studies and Deputy Chair of the Strategic Initiatives Department at the George C. Marshall European Center for Security Studies in Garmisch‑Partenkirchen, Germany, where she taught military and security professionals, developed courses, and coordinated regional defense cooperation.[3]
In 2024, she joined the National War College as Associate Professor of National Security Strategy.[2]
Wilson Center (Kennan Institute)
[edit]Since November 2023, Loftus has served as a Global Fellow and member of the Advisory Council at the Kennan Institute at the Wilson Center, where she contributes to programs on Russian and Eurasian security and offers strategic insight through policy briefs and analysis.[4]

Loftus also created and hosts the video‑podcast series Security in the 21st Century.[7]

[edit]Loftus has delivered lectures and keynote addresses at the Council on Foreign Relations, the U.S. Army War College, and George Washington University.
She serves as a peer reviewer for scholarly journals and as a contributing editor for *Per Concordiam*.[8]
