Super Mario Bros. Z (SMBZ) is a fan-made Flash-animated web series created by Mark Haynes, known online as Alvin-Earthworm. The series combines characters from Nintendo's Super Mario and Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchises, with storytelling and action sequences inspired by the anime Dragon Ball Z. It debuted on Newgrounds on April 22, 2006, and ran until 2012, concluding with an incomplete ninth episode.

In September 2015, Haynes announced a reboot of the series, releasing the first episode in January 2016. However, the project faced challenges when Nintendo issued a DMCA takedown of the series' Patreon page, citing unauthorized use of its intellectual property. Despite this, Haynes continued to release episodes on platforms like Newgrounds and YouTube. The series has been praised for its dynamic sprite animation and has cultivated a dedicated fanbase.

Plot

[edit]

After rebelling against Dr. Robotnik, Metal Sonic upgrades himself by merging with other mechanical creations, transforming into a powerful entity known as Metallix. He begins a destructive campaign across Mobius, eliminating most of its inhabitants, leaving only Sonic and Shadow. Outmatched, the two heroes use the last of their strength to send the Chaos Emeralds to an alternate dimension — the Mushroom Kingdom. With the Emeralds scattered, Sonic, Shadow, Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi must join forces to recover them before Metallix can seize their power.
