Sulaimon Yusuf Bamidele (popularly known as SYB) is a Nigerian politician and entrepreneur. He was born on the 12th of Febrauray, 1968 to the family of Alhaji Muftau Aremu Yusuf and Mrs Folorunsho Yusuf. He is married with three children.
Early life and Education
[edit]Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf was born in Lagos. He attended Baptist Primary School (now known as Akin Jacobs Primary School) between 1976 to 1981. He proceeded to Government College, Eric Moore, Lagos between 1981 to 1987 where he received his First School Leaving Certificate. On completion of his secondary education, SYB enrolled in Nigerian Institute of Printing and Graphic Arts (Sabo, Yaba) between 1989 and 1992, receiving Diploma in Printing. Between 2015 and 2021, Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf attended Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), where he received Bachelor's Degree (B.Sc) in Public Administration. He further enrolled for his second degree (Masters of Science) in 2024.
Politics and Political Engagements
[edit]Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf started his political engagement as a member of the Social Democratic Party between 1993 and 1995. He was elected as the councilor of Adeniran Ogunsanya ward (G2) in Surulere Local Government, under the banner of United Nigeria Progressives Congress (UNCP) from 1996 to 1998. Before the end of 1998, he switched his party allegiance to the newly formed All People's Party (APP), thus becoming the Councilorship candidate of the same ward in 1998 Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf became a member of the Alliance for Democracy in 2005 up till 2008, where he rose to the position of LGA Assistant Secretary. Between 2008 and 2011, he was appointed as the Supervisory Councilor for Health in Surulere Local Government. By 2011, he was given a joint ticket, and subsequently elected as the Vice Chairman of Surulere Local Government, a position he occupied until 2014. At the expiration of his tenure as vice chairman, he was appointed as Deputy Executive Secretary of Surulere Local Government, acting in such position until 2015. In 2017, Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf was again, elected as Vice Chairman on Surulere Local Government on a joint party ticket with his predecessor, Tajudeen Ajide.[1] Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf was elected as the chairman of Surulere Local Government in July 2021 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).[2][3][4]. Sulaimon Yusuf Bamidele, in his first tenure as local government chairman undertook several welfare interventions for the good people of Surulere[5][6]. He is currently seeking re-election as executive chairman of Surulere Local Government, having won the party's (APC) ticket in the just-concluded party primaries in May 2025.
Community Impact
[edit]Sulaimon Yusuf Bamidele has continued to transform the Surulere landscape by prioritizing welfarism for the good people of Surulere.[7][8][9]In August 2024, Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf embarked on an empowerment initiative to boost the economic standing of several residents of Surulere through an empowerment program that witnessed 850 beneficiaries getting business grants and starter packages.[10] [11]The items distributed to 600 beneficiaries include deep freezers, generators, industrial sewing machines, and grinding machines. About 250 individuals also received N100,000 each as financial grants.[12][13] Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf's administration continues to partner with Non-governmental Organizations towards improving the welfare and economic capacity of residents of Surulere. [14][15][16]
In the area of sports, Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf has continually exhibited zealousness towards ensuring that Surulere continue to encourage participation in sporting activities in Lagos State. As part of his unwavering efforts towards the upliftment of sporting activities in Surulere, his administration was awarded the hosting rights of the 2023 edition of Lagos Street Soccer Championship.[17] This held profound significance, given the Local government's rich sporting heritage. In February 2025, Sulaimon Bamidele Yusuf launched Rugby Rising Play, a sporting initiative aimed at increasing female participation in rugby across Lagos State.[18]This groundbreaking program is uniquely tailored to meet the needs of young female athletes, setting the stage for a new generation of players. In Surulere, four secondary schools have been carefully selected to participate, paving the way for increased engagement and participation in the sport. This is a fantastic opportunity to empower young girls and build a vibrant community around rugby.
