He is currently Dean of Graduate School of Science and Technology, Mid-West University, Nepal[3]. He has contributed significantly to the understanding of glacier dynamics, snow cover changes, and high-altitude ecosystem responses to global warming, especially in the context of Nepal and the Hindu Kush-Himalaya region.[4]
Early life and education
[edit]Sudeep Thakuri was born in Nepal. He pursued his higher education in environmental science and later specialized in glaciology and climate science. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Science (2015), with research focused on Himalayan glaciers and climate interactions. He is also the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Scholar (2011-2014).[5]
Career
[edit]Dr. Thakuri is an associate professor[6] and researcher at Tribhuvan University in Nepal, where he teaches environmental science and conducts field-based studies in the high-mountain regions. He has led and participated in several interdisciplinary research projects related to:
Glacier monitoring and mass balance studies Climate change impact assessments in the Himalayas Water resource modeling and ecosystem services High-mountain environmental monitoring systems His research often involves collaboration with international organizations, including ICIMOD (International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development), UNDP, and contributions to global initiatives, like the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) assessments.
Research and publications
[edit]Thakuri has authored and co-authored numerous scientific papers on glaciology, climate change, and environmental science, many of which are published in peer-reviewed journals. His work has contributed valuable data on glacier retreat, snow cover changes, and permafrost dynamics in Nepal[7]. He is also a media writer[8], [9] and is covering articles on environments, climate change, and education. He has written books such as "Strengthening Climate Rationale: Enhancing Access to Climate Finance", "Mountain Meteorology: Weather Forecasting and Early Warning System in Nepal".
Recognition and contributions
[edit]Recognized for advancing Nepal's scientific understanding of climate change impacts on high-mountain ecosystems Key figure in promoting climate resilience and adaptation strategies in Nepal Frequently cited in national and international media[10],[11], on climate and environmental issues in the Himalayas. Active in capacity-building programs and training young researchers in Nepal.
Personal life
[edit]Thakuri is known for his dedication to environmental protection and science communication[12]. He often participates in outreach activities and advocates for evidence-based policy-making in climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction in Nepal.
