Sudeep Kanwal
Sudeep Kanwal is an Indian-born, New York-based filmmaker and photographer known for his work in independent cinema. He gained recognition for his debut feature film, Privacy (2023), a psychological thriller set in Mumbai that premiered at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) in South Korea.
Early Life and Education
Kanwal was born in India and later moved to the United States to pursue higher education. He earned a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Film from the City College of New York (CUNY), specializing in writing and directing fiction films.
Career
Filmmaking Kanwal began his career directing short films. His short film Silent Wave (2013) was screened at 23 film festivals across the United States and received awards for editing and cinematography.
His subsequent short film, Dhund (2018), a period drama set during the Partition of India, premiered at the Mumbai Film Festival (MAMI) and won the Perfect 10 award in the Large Short Films category.
Kanwal's feature directorial debut, Privacy (2023), explores themes of surveillance, trauma, and personal freedom. The film follows Roopali, a surveillance operator in Mumbai, who becomes obsessed with a murder case she's monitoring. Privacy had its world premiere at the 27th Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival (BIFAN) in South Korea.
Photography and Entrepreneurship In addition to filmmaking, Kanwal co-founded House of Talent Studio, a creative company specializing in South Asian wedding photography and cinematography. The studio is known for its documentary-style storytelling and has served clients across the United States.
