From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The precise style of the Byzantine sovereign. The last sovereign, emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos used the style:

Constantine Palaiologos in Christ the God, faithful basileus and autokrator of the Romans

Early history

[edit]

By the second century AD, the Roman emperor had an established style of "Imperator Caesar (name) Augustus." In Greek, this was rendered as "Autocrator Kaisar Augoustos" (Ancient Greek: Αὐτοκράτωρ Kαῖσαρ Αὔγουστος), although the Greek-speakers informally referred to the emperor as basileus (Ancient Greek: βασιλεύς), the Hellenistic title of Alexander the Great and his successsors. In the fourth century "Flavius'" (Ancient Greek: Φλάβιος or Φλαύιος), the gentilicium of Constantine the Great was included in the regnal formula. Included with the regnal name were numerous epithets victory titles, thus the full title of Constantine I was:

Imperator Caesar Flavius Valerius Constantinus Pius Felix Augustus

Justin II (r. 565–578) was the first emperor to include the phrase "faithful in Christ" Latin: fidelis in christo in his title.
