Stewart Charles Cohen is a Canadian-American director, photographer, and author known for his visual storytelling across commercial, editorial, and fine art platforms.[1] He was born in Montreal inside an elevator during a snowstorm. His father was an architect and his mother an actress.[2] Cohen moved to the United States to attend the University of Texas at Austin in the 1980s.[1]

Cohen originally thought about going into law or medicine,[3] but shifted gears to pursue a creative path in photography, eventually apprenticing with international photographer, Helmut Newton.[1][3] He went back to school and studied in the film department at University of Southern California.[3] He began directing motion video in the early 1990s.

Cohen is currently based in Dallas, Texas and is the founder of Stewart Cohen Pictures,[1][3] a production company specializing in live-action and still photography. Cohen is also the owner of SuperStock Images, a stock imagery company with offices in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. His work has taken him to over 40 countries across all seven continents.[1]

As a lifestyle photographer, his subjects have included everyday individuals, celebrities, athletes, and political leaders. Cohen works with a variety of well-known agencies and brands. Clients have included American Airlines, AT&T, BMW, Ford, Frito-Lay, Gatorade, Nike, PepsiCo, Pfizer, Southwest Airlines, Toyota, Verizon, and Walmart.[2][3] He is a member of the Directors Guild of America and the Dallas Producers Association.

Cohen has published photographic monographs and table books, and has had his work displayed at various art exhibitions. Recent books include Identity, a portrait-based project featuring handwritten notes from each subject featuring Albert II, Prince of Monaco, T. Boone Pickens, and Philip Glass, amongst others,[4] and Seeing Red, a visual exploration of redheads, which included a forward from comedian, Carrot Top.[5]

  • "Ice" Exhibition[6] - Temerlin McClain. Dallas, Texas, 2002. Holt-Russell Gallery. Baldwin City, Kansas, 2002. This photo exhibition captures the iceberg-laden waters of Antarctica, Alaska, Norway, and the Arctic Circle. Set against a backdrop of clear blue depths and endless ice, each image magnifies the serenity of these remote, frozen landscapes.
  • "Dark Elves" Exhibition - Bath House Cultural Center. Dallas, Texas, December 6–28, 2001. This photo exhibition reimagines Santa’s helpers through a shadowy lens, drawing on ancient Dokkalfar folklore to present a more haunting vision of holiday elves.[7] Photography shot in Texas and Louisiana.
  • Fotofever Photography Art Fair Exhibition - The Louvre during the Mois de la Photo in Paris, France, November 2014.[6] Several of Cohen's images from Peek (previously known as Innocent Bystanders) were included as part of the fifth Fotofever Photography Art Fair exhibition coordinated by Duncan Miller Gallery, Los Angeles.

Cohen has received numerous accolades having won over 50 industry awards. His work has been featured in advertising campaigns, major publications, corporate offices, galleries, and museums.[1]

  • Lürzer's Archive 200 Best Ad Photographers Worldwide and multiple Telly Awards for his film work.
  • Golden Egg Awards recipient, which is bestowed by the Dallas Society of Visual Communications. Has been given to only 35 practicing visual communicators in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.[8]
  • Adweek Photographer of the Year[9]
