[edit]

Stark Gallery is an art gallery located on Old North Wharf in Nantucket, Massachusetts. Founded in 1972 by painter Robert Stark Jr., the gallery is widely considered the oldest operating art gallery on the island.[1] Known for its deep ties to the local art community, the gallery became a central fixture of Nantucket’s cultural life throughout the late 20th century.[2]

History

[edit]

Robert Stark Jr., a Nantucket native and U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, opened Stark Gallery in 1972 after returning to the island to pursue a full-time career in painting.[3] A luminist, his work often drew on maritime themes and Nantucket’s coastal landscape, contributing to a broader movement of regional American art during the postwar period. The gallery quickly established itself as a respected venue for local and regional artists and played a notable role in promoting Nantucket as a destination for fine art.[4]

Stark’s signature “red sail” paintings became closely associated with the island’s visual identity and were widely collected by seasonal residents and art patrons.[5] His work has been exhibited in galleries across New England and New York City and is held in private and corporate collections across the United States, Canada, and Europe.[6]

After establishing himself as a fixture in the Nantucket art community, Robert Stark Jr. was followed in the artistic tradition by his sons, Robert Stark III and Dylan Stark. Robert Stark III is predominantly a realist still life painter who focuses on the subtle effects of light on his subjects, drawing strongly from Dutch still life traditions.

Dylan Stark is a traditional landscape and seascape painter, heavily influenced by the luminist style popular among late 19th-century American landscape artists. His work emphasizes the tranquility present in nature, aiming to invoke a feeling of calmness and contemplation.[7]

Both artists exhibited regularly at Stark Gallery, contributing to its evolving identity while maintaining the legacy of island-based art.
