Production

[edit]

At San Diego Comic-Con on July 19, 2018, a panel celebrating the tenth anniversary of The Clone Wars was held. Attendees included production supervisor Dave Filoni, executive producer Athena Yvette Portillo, composer Kevin Kiner, and cast members Matt Lanter and Ashley Eckstein. The panel provided insight into the production process of the series. At its conclusion, a trailer announced the revival of The Clone Wars with twelve new episodes set to premiere on Disney's streaming service. Filoni admitted he hadn’t believed a return was possible but credited the persistent fan support since the show's 2013 cancellation as a decisive factor.

At Star Wars Celebration Chicago on April 14, 2019, several clips and a second trailer were unveiled. The final season consists of three main story arcs:

  • The first arc features the Bad Batch, a group of genetically enhanced clone troopers with unique traits and combat abilities. This storyline was previously released in unfinished animatic form on the official Star Wars website in 2015.
  • The second arc follows Ahsoka Tano after her departure from the Jedi Order. She gains a new outfit, similar to her appearance in Star Wars Rebels, and meets two sisters, Trace and Rafa Martez, on Coruscant’s level 1313. Originally, she was meant to meet a character named Nyx Okami and become involved in the criminal underworld.
  • The final arc, *The Siege of Mandalore*, serves as the series finale. It takes place during the events of Revenge of the Sith and features Order 66. Much of the story was developed by Filoni and George Lucas and was previously hinted at in the novel *Ahsoka* and the series *Star Wars Rebels*.

Author E.K. Johnston revealed that Lucasfilm asked her not to include action scenes from the siege in the novel because the series was secretly being revived. The arc includes a dramatic duel between Ahsoka and Maul. Ray Park, who portrayed Maul in *The Phantom Menace* and *Solo*, performed the motion capture to enhance the realism. Maul's design was updated to match his look in *Solo*. Improved animation techniques allowed for more expressive character faces while maintaining stylistic consistency with earlier seasons.

At Disney’s D23 Expo on August 24, 2019, it was announced that the new episodes would premiere in February 2020. Filoni, who wrote and directed the final four episodes, confirmed this would mark the definitive end of the series, saying: "This will conclude the story that George Lucas and I started together."

On January 22, 2020, Lucasfilm announced that the new episodes would begin streaming on February 21, 2020.
