St. Thomas Mount Basilica known as National Shrine Basilica of St. Thomas Mount is a Minor basilica dedicated to Thomas the Apostle located in the hilltop of Parangimalai (known as St. Thomas Mount) in Chennai. This church is located to the place where Thomas the Apostle is believed to be killed and later his body is buried in Mylapore, present day at St. Thomas Cathedral Basilica, Chennai.[1] [2]

Key Dates

  • AD 72 - Saint Thomas the Apostle believed to have martyred in the hill.
  • AD 151 - A memorial stone altar was raised by the disciples of Saint Thomas on the very spot of the martyrdom.
  • 1523 - A small shrine in the hilltop is built by Portuguese.
  • 1547 - Construction of a new church over the very spot of the martyrdom of Saint Thomas by Diogo Fernandes Pereira a Portuguese Explorer.
  • 1707 - The church was further extended and renovated.
  • 2003 - The Shrine was declared a diocesan shrine on 3rd July by Diocese of Chingleput.
  • 2010 - The Shrine was elevated to regional shrine on 16th July by TNBC.
  • 2011 - Further it was elevated to National Shrine on 3rd April by CCBI.
  • 2023 - The celebration of 500th anniversary.
  • 2024 - The church undergoes Renovation, Restored and extension chapel was constructed.
  • 2025 - The church was proclaimed and raised as minor basilica on 3rd July.
