Soul to Squeeze is a 2025 American independent psychological drama directed by W.M. Weikart. The film follows a tormented young man who checks into an experimental treatment facility where the structure of the house reflects the shifting terrain of his psyche. As he descends deeper into his subconscious, he encounters a parade of vivid, often contradictory characters that challenge, provoke, and ultimately guide him through his trauma.
The film is notable for being the first narrative feature to use a continuously evolving aspect ratio as a storytelling device. The aspect ratio widens from a 4:3 to a 2.35, as the protagonist confronts and overcomes psychological thresholds, visually reflecting his expanding perception and personal transformation.
Plot
[edit]A young man, emotionally tormented and haunted by guilt, checks into an isolated house for a radical new psychological treatment. Inside, he discovers a surreal realm where the physical structure connects to different layers of his psyche. As he moves deeper into the house and his own mind, he confronts manifestations of himself, his memories, and the consequences of past actions — a parade of vivid, contradictory characters — forcing him to decide whether he has the grit to endure the process or abandon it, risking permanent madness.
Production
[edit]Directed by W.M. Weikart, the film was conceived as a psychological journey where narrative structure and visual form evolve in tandem. The production employed a custom aspect ratio technique that dynamically changes over the course of the film, beginning in a narrow format and expanding incrementally as the protagonist progresses emotionally and psychologically.
This evolving aspect ratio is used not only as a visual metaphor for the character's growth but also as a structural narrative tool, influencing staging, blocking, and viewer perception. According to early reviews and coverage, this is the first time a feature-length film has used this kind of progressive ratio shift in a fully integrated narrative framework.
