Sonam Kalra is an Indian singer, composer and creator of The Sufi Gospel Project, a musical initiative that blends Sufi poetry with gospel hymns, Hindustani classical idioms and world-music instrumentation.[1] She has performed in more than 30 countries, including shows at the Sydney Opera House, Cairo Opera House and MTV’s Coke Studio.[2]

Early life and education

Kalra was born and raised in New Delhi. She studied Hindustani classical music under Shubha Mudgal and Pandit Sarathi Chatterjee, gospel and jazz with Ashley Clement in Singapore, and classical opera with the Korean tenor Hur Chul Young.[3]

The Sufi Gospel Project

Launched in 2011, *The Sufi Gospel Project* interweaves verses by mystic poets such as Bulleh Shah, Kabir and Amir Khusrow with Christian hymns like “Amazing Grace”, creating what Kalra calls “one universal voice of faith”.[4]

International performances

  • Partition: Stories of Separation – a multimedia production reflecting on the 1947 partition of India and Pakistan.[3]

Activism

Kalra regularly performs at charity concerts supporting cancer treatment, child-protection NGOs, animal-rights groups and women’s empowerment initiatives.[3] She is also a frequent TEDx and conference speaker, including Tina Brown’s Women in the World summit.[6]
