Following a masterclass at the Sarajevo Film Festival in August 2024, Alexander Payne revealed that he would be directing his first film not in the English language: a Danish-language film funded entirely by European sources. Payne had previously attempted to make a Danish film with Netflix in 2019 with Mads Mikkelsen attached to star, but the project fell through shortly before principal photography was to commence.[1] In May 2025, the project was revealed to have been titled Somewhere Out There, with Erlend Loe writing a screenplay based on an original idea by Åke Sandgren, and Renate Reinsve joining the film in a supporting role. Birgitte Skov will produce the film for Danish company Scanbox Entertainment, which will also distribute in the Nordics, with further funding obtained from Norwegian, Swedish, and French companies.[2] That same month, Searchlight Pictures acquired worldwide distribution rights outside the Nordics to the film, with principal photography scheduled to begin sometime in 2026 in Denmark.[3]
