Solena Chaniago (b. 9 April 1978) is an Indonesian haidresser and internet celebrity.
Personal life and career
[edit]Solena is born in Padang on 9 April 1978.[1]Since she was 6 years old, she had already realized that her gender identity was female, even though she was raised as a male. This realization came when she enjoyed wearing dress that owned by her aunt.[2] Because of her identity, she was bullied. At 11 years old, she came out to her parents about her gender.[3]She was having his first crush with her senior in her high school and first gay relationship on 1993.[4] After graduating from high school, she moved from Banda Aceh to Padang to study economics at Universitas Bung Hatta. While in college, she had relationships with men, which made her parents furious. They forced her to go home during her sixth semester of college.[2] On 1994, she was chosen as finalist for Uda None, beauty pageant in West Sumatra.[5]
In 2003, she married a woman and they divorced a year later. She also had a daughter with her ex-wife. The divorce happened because she was often hospitalized for the depression she was experiencing.[6] After the divorce, she move to New York City on 2005 and worked as waiter.[7]As hairdresser she claimed that she has styled hairstyling for Bill Clinton and Scooter Braun.[8]Her daughter was publicly came out as lesbian on when she was 16 years old.[9] She decided to do transition in 2010 in Thailand.[10] She claimed that she spent more than one billion rupiah on the transition.[11] She was married again on 2017[12] with a man from United States in Los Angeles.[13] She said that it needs 6 years to gain permission to be married with her husband cause of her identity as transgender.[14]
She was best friend of Bunda Corla, Indonesian internet celebrity and actress since 2010[1] and also best friend of Nikita Mirzani.[15] Nikita also using her as an example of transgender who is already came out to criticize Lucinta Luna to come out as transgender.[16]
Activism
[edit]In response to the news of the murder of Mayang Prasetyo, she criticized the media coverage for focusing on Mayang's work as a prostitute rather than the mutilation that happened to her.[17]
