Srinivasan “Siva” Sivaram is an Indian-American materials scientist and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of QuantumScape. He was previously President of Technology and Strategy at Western Digital, and Executive Vice President of Memory Technology at SanDisk.
Early life and education
[edit]Sivaram was born in Gandhigram, India, the youngest of 5 siblings. His father, R. Srinivasan, was an educational psychologist focused on primary education and a frequent advisor to the government on national education strategies. His mother, Brahada, was a teacher. Sivaram earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli, where he was later honored as a Distinguished Alumnus. He moved to the United States to study at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), earning an M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science. He was elected to RPI’s Board of Trustees in 2016.[1]
Career
[edit]Sivaram began his career at Intel, where he worked from 1986 to 1999. During his time there, he held several leadership positions, primarily in semiconductor research and manufacturing. His work at Intel helped him develop deep expertise in the tech industry, which he later brought to other companies in the sector.[2]
After Intel, Sivaram transitioned to Matrix Semiconductor, where he served as Chief Operating Officer from 1999 to 2006. Matrix pioneered the early development of 3D semiconductor architectures, and Sivaram's leadership was instrumental in advancing the company’s technologies and bringing them to market.[3] Following SanDisk's acquisition of Matrix in 2006, Sivaram rose to the position of Executive Vice President of Memory Technology, where he oversaw key advancements in flash memory technology, including the development of 3D NAND (BiCS), ReRAM, and other innovations. His leadership played a critical role in making SanDisk a key player in the memory industry.[4]
In 2008, Sivaram founded Twin Creeks Technologies, a technology company developing manufacturing equipment for the production of solar modules, sensors, LEDs, and other solid-state devices. Sivaram led the firm’s efforts to innovate in the solar energy sector, developing cutting-edge methods to improve the manufacturing processes for solar cells, which could potentially make solar energy more affordable and accessible.[5]
In 2016, Sivaram joined Western Digital following its acquisition of SanDisk. There, he took on the role of Executive Vice President of Memory Technology and was later appointed President of Technology and Strategy in August 2019. In this position, Sivaram oversaw the company’s technology strategy, including efforts in storage solutions, semiconductor advancements, and next-generation memory technologies. He held this leadership position until November 2023.[6]
In September 2023, Sivaram joined QuantumScape, a company developing next-generation, solid-state batteries. He was appointed CEO in February 2024, tasked with leading the company through its next phase of growth, including scaling manufacturing capabilities and bringing its solid-state battery technologies to market.[7]
Board and professional affiliations
[edit]Sivaram has served on the boards of several non-profit and for-profit organizations. He sits on the board of the Akshaya Patra Foundation, a non-governmental organization providing nutritious meals to schoolchildren across India. His philanthropic efforts have focused on improving education access and child welfare[8]
Outside his philanthropic work, Sivaram is active in the venture capital and start-up ecosystems. He served as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at both Crosslink Capital and XSeed Capital, where he provided strategic guidance and mentorship to early-stage technology companies.[9]
Publications and patents
[edit]Sivaram is the author of technical papers and a textbook on chemical-vapor deposition, with several patents in semiconductor and solar technologies.[10]
Personal life
[edit]Sivaram is married to Ranjana Sivaram. They live in Monte Sereno, California and have three children: Varun, Uttara, and Saya.
