Program Features

[edit]

In mainland China, due to the high policy risk of news programs, the difficulty of getting effective ratings, and the lack of news resources in local stations, provincial satellite channels rarely broadcast news programs during prime time, but mainly produce variety shows and broadcast TV dramas. Shenzhen Satellite TV, on the other hand, puts more emphasis on news programs, unlike the vast majority of satellite channels.[45]

Shenzhen Satellite Television (SZTV) started broadcasting in 2004, initially 80% of its programs were broadcast in Cantonese, but due to the characteristics of the “immigrant city” and the approval by the SARFT of Southern Satellite Television (SSTV) to be the designated Cantonese-language broadcasting channel, SZTV was asked to switch to Putonghua for all its broadcasts. [46]At that time, many provincial satellite channels (e.g. Zhejiang Satellite TV and Hunan Satellite TV) already had some experience in variety show production and broadcasting, and had gained a certain audience base. After being required to broadcast in Mandarin, Shenzhen Satellite TV went out to cover the whole country (landing in Guangzhou in 2006), and in order to achieve higher ratings, it took advantage of its proximity to Hong Kong to start with news programs, and has maintained a second-tier level.[47]

In 2006, Shenzhen Broadcasting Group was authorized to set up a reporter station and studio in Hong Kong and dispatch reporters to the scene of an event when a major international incident occurs. Since then[48], Shenzhen Satellite Television has also set up reporter stations and studios in Beijing, Shanghai and Taipei, so that when a major incident occurs, Shenzhen Satellite Television can arrive at the scene in time to cover the event.[49]

On May 1 of the same year, Shenzhen TV news program “Live from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan” was launched, which summarizes current affairs, political and military news from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, as well as international news, and invites commentators from all over the world to comment on it. [50]In 2011, 2012 and 2013, the program “Live Military Situation”, “Winning the High Ground” and “Key Insight” were launched to analyze current affairs and political news from various angles, which made the prime-time program of Shenzhen Satellite TV different from other satellite channels.[51][52]

[edit]

The logo of Shenzhen Satellite Television is the same as that of the Shenzhen Broadcasting Group: the S-shape of the logo represents the pinyin initials of “shēn”, and the reverse Z-shape represents the pinyin initials of “zhen” (zhèn)[53]. The three lines in the logo were originally red, green and blue, the three primary colors of television signals, but were later changed to monochrome. In the early days of SZTV, the logo was red, with the word “Shenzhen” on the right side in a casual and calligraphic font (before it was launched, it was the same as other channels, “white S logo + ordinary font ‘SZTV-X’”),[54] and then changed back to its original form after a period of time, i.e. SZTV-X'), after a period of time, it changed back to its original form, i.e., “white S station label + the word ‘Shenzhen’ in ordinary font”, and the other channels also changed to “white S station label + the channel name in ordinary font”, while the domestic version of SZTV's domestic label in 2010 added the word "Satellite Television In 2010, the domestic version of Shenzhen Satellite TV added the word “Satellite TV” to its logo.[55]

In the early morning of December 8, 2017, the entire Shenzhen TV station to replace the station label, for the current white filigree station label on the basis of embedded pink card rectangular style, in the bottom side of the label written in the channel name, and join the constantly rotating around the highlights of the halo dynamic effects. [56]The text of Shenzhen Satellite TV's label is still “Shenzhen Satellite TV” (domestic version) and “Shenzhen” (international version).[57]

Broadcast format

[edit]

SD: Aspect ratio 16:9, 576i, sound in stereo.[59]

HD: Aspect ratio 16:9, 1080i, sound in stereo and surround.

The version of DTT broadcast in Shenzhen is in DTMB format, with the picture encoded in MPEG-4 and the accompanying sound in MPEG-1.[60][61]

Before the SD version of SZTV realizes 16:9 format broadcasting, the 4:3 screen will be truncated from the 16:9 screen when broadcasting news programs, so the subtitle running lights at the bottom of the screen and the weather warning icon in the upper right corner will accommodate the viewers watching the SD version; while TV dramas and variety shows will add black edges on the top and bottom of the screen, so as not to make the subtitle and the characters cannot be fully displayed. For 4:3 aspect ratio programs, the HD version of SZTV will add black borders on both sides, where in news programs, 4:3 aspect ratio news footage will be filled with a defocused background on both sides.

Reception method

[edit]

Satellite Signal Reception: Both SD and HD versions of SZTV are broadcast to East Asia via Asia-Pacific-5 138Ku band and China Star 6AC band[62] (HD version is code-locked).[63]

[edit]
  • In 2011, the Broadcasting Authority of Hong Kong received a number of complaints alleging that in a number of episodes of the program “Live from Hong Kong and Macao”,[68] there were advertisements and promotional contents that contravened the requirements set out in the Hong Kong Code of Practice on Television Business (Programmes and Advertisements)[69]
