Sharifbek Zavkibekov Sharifbek Zavkibekov (Tajik: Шарифбек Завқибеков, 3 February 1938 – 30 January 2018) was a Soviet Tajik construction technician and engineer from Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region GBAO, Tajikistan. Over the course of several decades, he contributed significantly to rural and urban infrastructure development in the city of Khorog and surrounding districts. He is remembered as one of the most respected figures in the construction sector of Soviet Badakhshan.

Early Life and Education Sharifbek Zavkibekov was born on 3 February 1938 in Khorog, then part of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic, into a farming family. He completed his secondary education at the Kirov School (школа им. Кирова) in Khorog before continuing his studies in Dushanbe. He later enrolled in a technical construction college, graduating in 1970 with a specialization in mechanized construction.

Career Zavkibekov began his career in the mid-1960s, working in various roles as a mechanical technician and construction supervisor. Between 1966 and 1970, he was employed at construction sites in both rural and urban parts of GBAO. He served in several major construction brigades, including the 31st Department of Rural Construction and TMK-148 in Khorog.

In 1985, Zavkibekov became the head of the SPMK-24 mechanized mobile construction unit in Khorog, where he oversaw the building of housing and public infrastructure. His leadership extended to multiple projects in remote regions such as the Gunt and Ishkashim valleys, where he managed short-term and long-term construction assignments. Zavkibekov was noted for his hands-on management style, problem-solving skills, and ability to foster teamwork under difficult conditions. Legacy and Recognition Sharifbek Zavkibekov’s contributions earned him widespread respect among colleagues, local officials, and residents. During the Soviet period, a neighborhood developed under his leadership—where a dam and residential infrastructure were constructed—became affectionately known as Sharifstroy ("built by Sharif"). In the post-Soviet period, this same neighborhood was officially named Sharifobod in his honor.

According to political activist Alim Sherzamonov, who reflected on Zavkibekov’s legacy in a 2018 Facebook post, he was one of the only Soviet citizens to have a neighborhood named after him during his lifetime.[1]

Death Sharifbek Zavkibekov passed away on 30 January 2018 at the age of 80. A memorial tribute published in the Badakhshon newspaper described him as a devoted professional and a kind, principled human being.[2] He was remembered with deep respect by his peers, including engineers, architects, and local civic leaders.
