Sebastian Grönwall is a Swedish contemporary artist known for his landscape paintings.[1] He works outdoors, aiming to capture the light, colour shifts, and atmosphere of landscapes directly in front of the motif, often completing oil paintings on site from initial sketches.[1] This approach, described as potentially taking months or even years for a single piece, is stated to require patience, discipline, and adaptation to changing weather conditions.[2]
Grönwall's connection to nature is a significant influence on his art; he perceives nature as a dynamic of constant transformation.[2] Growing up in Hellvi, Gotland, near the Sajgs nature reserve, the natural environment became central to his life and a primary subject for his artistic expression.[1][3][2] He is described in sources as particularly drawn to untouched, sparse, and rugged landscapes, focusing on the feeling and atmosphere of a place rather than solely relying on photographic references.[1][2]

In 2013, a mural painting he created in Cleveland, Ohio in 2009, along with four other paintings, were considered for inclusion in a Kevin Costner film produced by Lionsgate and Summit Entertainment.[4] According to Grönwall in a Sveriges Radio interview, he signed a contract granting usage rights, viewing it as a positive confirmation of his work.[4]
