The Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean research initiative is a geographical node and partner to Sea Around Us.[1], a global research initiative located at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada. Professor Zeller was with Sea Around Us at UBC since its inception in 1999 and had been its Senior Scientist and Executive Director[2]. Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean shares the research aim of it's partner Sea Around Us to investigate and document the impact of fishing on global marine ecosystems, with a focus on on Australia and the wider Indo-Pacific[3].

Background

[edit]

Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean was established in 2017[4] by Professor Dirk Zeller when he was appointed Professor of Marine Conservation at The University of Western Australia, in Perth, Australia, and located within the School of Biological Sciences.

In 2019, Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean grew in size as more researchers and postgraduate students joined the team[5].

In 2021 Professor Zeller was named "Australia’s Top Researcher in the field of Marine Sciences and Fisheries (Life Sciences category)" by The Australian’s 2021 Research Magazine[6][7].

In 2023 Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean hosted Harvard University Professor Christopher Golden and his his post-doctoral researchers, Dr. Jessica Zamborain-Mason and Dr. Laura Elsler, during a week of collaborative events, including a master class workshop and public lecture[8]. The collaborative joint effort further strengthened the relationship between Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean at UWA and Harvard University.

In 2024 Sea Around Us - Indian Ocean expanded it's research capabilities by launching the Freshwater Hub[9]; an initiative aimed at investigating sustainable management and conservation of freshwater resources in the Indo-Pacific region[10]. The Freshwater Hub initiative is led by Dr. Wanja Nyingi[11].

Studying with the Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean

[edit]

The Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean contributes to several undergraduate and graduate teaching units and degrees at the University of Western Australia[12][13]. Primary emphasis of Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean teaching efforts in fisheries science and marine biology rests within the Bachelor of Marine Biology and the Honours/Masters of Marine Biology degrees.

Professor Zeller also supervises PhD research students conducting research in fisheries science, fisheries conservation, seafood nutrition and fisheries economics at the ocean-basin and global scales[14].

Partnerships & collaborations

[edit]

The Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean welcomes the opportunity to foster open collaborations and partnerships, and has established a number of professional research partnerships and collaborations globally[15]

Current partnerships include:

Publications & research

[edit]

The Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean has produced a number of peer-reviewed publications and reports based on research findings related to the impacts of fishing on marine ecosystems at the large spatial scale, including reconstruction of historic catch, fishing effort and other fisheries time series.

Publications and research theses by the research group can be found online and on the Sea Around Us – Indian Ocean website.
