Sanjay Shah (Writer and Showrunner)
[edit]Sanjay Shah is an American television writer and showrunner known for his work on animated and live-action series and film.
Early Life and Education
[edit]Sanjay Shah was born in San Jose, CA. He graduated from the University of California, Berkeley where he was a competitive boxer.[1] Prior to his career in entertainment, Shah worked as a legislative aide in the California State Capitol, as a stock broker on the Pacific Stock Exchange, and volunteered as a writing tutor at San Quentin State Prison .[2]
Career
[edit]Shah began his entertainment career in stand-up comedy before transitioning to television and film writing.
His first entertainment job was working as a production assistant on the movie Asphalt Wars produced by the legendary Roger Corman.[3]
He later joined the writing staff of the long-running animated series King of the Hill and worked as a writing consultant on South Park. Shah went on to write for several live-action series.[4]
From 2015 to 2018, Shah served as a co-executive producer and writer on the critically-acclaimed series Fresh Off the Boat. He was a co-showrunner, executive producer, and writer for two seasons of Apple TV+'s animated musical series Central Park. He also worked as a consulting producer and writer on the Pixar series Dream Productions which takes place in the world of Inside Out.[5]He has sold television pilots to major streamers and networks such as Hulu, Netflix, Paramount+, ABC, FOX, and NBC.[6]
In 2024, Shah worked with Chris Rock to develop an animated revival of the live-action Everybody Hates Chris series.[7]Shah served as showrunner, executive producer and writer of the new series, Everybody Still Hates Chris, which received a two season order from Paramount+.[8]
In addition to his television work, Shah has worked on several features, most notably for Pixar and Sony Pictures Animation.
Shah was a writing mentor at the Sundance Institute’s annual Episodic Lab for several years. He also mentors for the Stowe Story Lab [9]and Rideback Rise [10]where he provides guidance to emerging writers. He has paneled at San Diego Comic Con,[11] ATX, and the Austin Film Festival.
